buying a new limited but have questions...

I scrapped the 20s and the xreas pretty quick on mine. Made the world of difference.

Mine is actually a company car. We didn't even consider the lower trim models.

After researching, initially I thought we should have gone with Trail, but now I would do it all the same again.

For me, KDSS was something I really wanted. If it were offered in a Limited - I would have bought the limited. AWD has no meaningful value to me, but some folks like it. The nicer interior is mostly what is compelling about the limited and the smart key. For me - the smart key and auto headlights are the biggest missing parts from my trail premium. For me, KDSS was the only must have option. It's unfortunate that Toyota doesn't give a little more flexibility in options like having a Limited with KDSS and a rear locker. They make the exact same vehicle in a Prado 150, so it's not as if they couldn't just spec one from parts bin stuff.

The only offerings I sometimes regret not going for instead are the other Toyota SUV alternatives. GX or LC200. But they'd be comparing used vs new for similar price range.

I actually bought the 20" wheels for my trail edition for street tires. Stock size tires are pretty small/hard riding, but if you want a bit taller tires 275/60/20's have enough sidewall to ride pretty nicely and are also offered in many street tread designs and are pretty cheap to boot!

Did you swap wheels and tires and suspension at the same time? I agree on the harsh ride with the wheels and tires, but I quite like the XREAS--it's not squishy soft but it seems responsive to me.

Then again, maybe my last ride was just a turd and I have no frame of reference.

I swapped out the wheels and tires at around 2k. It made a definite improvement in comfort with minimal change in handling. I drove about 10k more with just the new tires/rims. I still found that the XREAS suspension was too stiff for my taste. If you go over a series of bumps or washboard at speed, even with the 17" rims and tires at 30psi, the truck would be bouncy/jumpy. For reference, my last 2 vehicles were a Jeep Commander v8 and GMC 2500HD duramax and both handled bumps way better. After a lot of research and thinking, I found a used TRD Pro suspension for $750 and replaced XREAS. Shortly after I did a long 6k mile trip from Toronto to Moab and Ouray and can tell you the difference both on hwy and off road was very significant. This to me, was how the truck should come from the factory. That said, my preference is a suspension that does its job and does not prioritize keeping the truck flat like a sports car. The one downside I have experienced is in towing my boat which is a bit more floaty than it used to be with XREAS. It still feels safe but more like a previous gen pickup.

I have an earlier 5th gen Limited, I dumped the 20's and moved to new wheels with 285/75r17 and that did a ton. I did the toytec 3/2 spacer lift because I still have warranty left and didn't feel like scratching the XREAS quite yet. I have hit some good trails with the spacer kit and with the lower hanging bumpers having that little extra was definitely helpful. I do know that here in the next year I will move into a full suspension swap. If you're afraid that it isn't as capable as others, in my experience, I've been able to get through everything and anything that I've tried. Moving it into 4lo with A-trac can get you out of most sticky situations. I always wanted a trail but I bought this 4runner for a steal from a family member and I haven't even looked back wishing that I would have done something different because I have had great experiences with it offroad.

I just don’t know how I can handle all that chrome. It seems some years have it and some don’t.

skikab did a badass make over on his 14+ http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/220308-limited-edition-mod-thread-3.html.

If you have drips with plastidip, you're doing it wrong. The only hard part are the door handles.

Unfortunately, if you want seating, for 7, chrome/ silver is unavoidable. Even my SR5 has silver trim on the interior... should have gone with a trail premium.

did anyone have problems with the auto slide boards of the limited? would it be better to turn it off during winter like getting frozen during extremely low tems? hmm

Is there anything else about the limited that is pulling in that direction? You can get an SR5 premium with a third row that has the front end you want leather interior and the seating you need.
.

The main things that draw me to the Limited (like moth to flame) are the full time 4WD, the push button start, and (maybe) the XREAS.

Some of the best mods I've seen ripped the XREAS out. But many have said they love the XREAS and won't replace it until it dies and THEN do a full suspension upgrade.

Tough choices, but I expect I'll keep the XREAS until they either die or I find they're not doing what I need off road. (And I've yet to prove to myself that I'll do as much off roading as I fantasize that I will!)
