This may not be the right site for me since I'm a grumpy old 74 yo that has no interest in the extra crap Toyota didn't put on it to begin with. I live in mountainous area of N Idaho and can use 4WD occasionally. I have owned Toyotas since '79 and now have an '11 Prius and a '90 pickup. I always liked the 4R but always needed a PU. Now I want a nice used 4Runner. Looking at GenIII and am simply asking if there are things to consider that are not obvious to the 1st time 4Runner owner. When is the 22R engine not in the 4R? What about transmissions/transferbox setups? What models in the older categories are most desirable? Reliability is a big deal for me.

The 98+ have upgraded amenities. 99+ have best looking (imo) headlights and the optional sport models with the hood scoop. But that's slight upgrades and all looks, so if you don't need/want those things it makes no difference then.
Go for the 3.4L V6 instead of the 22RE. The 3.4 has been proven rock reliable with the 3rd gens and more power of course. As far as overall reliability get the SR5 version. Limited is the luxury automatic tranny only version. You can find SR5s in 5-speeds too. Desirable option is an electronic push-button differential locker.
