Buying AT tires. Keep 18" rims or downsize to 17"?

Hey Yall,

I've got an 06 Limited I just picked up and it has Bridgestone Dueler H/L.

I'm looking to upgrade to some All terrain tires for better performance and safety this upcoming winter (Trips to ski resorts every weekend, lots of wet/rainy driving, summer forest road camping)

I've got my eye on some Toyo Open Country A/T III in size 265/60 R18 for ~244ea and then just mounting them to my current rims and trying to sell the tires that are on the truck right

I'm wondering if this will be a good purchase or if trying to sell the 18in rim/tire combo I got and moving to a 17in rim would be better.

I'm not a "huge" fan of how my rims currently look, previous owner painted them black, though I think they might look better with some beefier tires on them

You can buy used 4Runner rims from $150 up to $400+ if you want to switch.

The current wheels you have are fine unless you air down a lot and wheel hard. Basic slow offroading I wouldn't switch.

The one advantage of 18" wheels is less sidewall flex in turns. So for street performance they are marginally better.

I would personally stay with the 18" wheels given what you use it for.

Keep the 18's, get the tires you want and then throw a set of spidertrax on it. I promise it will change the look of your 4Runner.

I like the 265 70 18 size that’s available - if i ever find a set of 18 inch wheels I’d go to that
