Buying new 4Runner - Am I being too optimistic on price?

Hey all! I am in the market for a new 4Runner. Looking at a standard sr5. Anyway I've been looking for a few weeks and figured I'd attempt to get one today. So my local dealer has a silver sr5, with running boards, tinted windows and cargo pull out. Pretty standard based on what I've seen. Anyway while talking numbers (for hours) the lowest they could go was $33,500, 2500 off sticker. I figured the invoice for these or their cost is maybe 10-20% of sticker. I think they can do more.

Anyway, where I feel I may have more room to help is with my trade. have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner sport. The car only has 65k mileage, nice nitto tires and cosmetically is probably 6-7/10. They offered me 14 (after original offers of 10 and 12), which isn't terrible. Blue book in good condition was 14700.

How much more do you think it's possible to squeeze out of this deal? I'd like to maybe work about 2-3 more grand off the total cost. FYI - fees, taxes, etc were quoted around 2-2500.

Would it be worth it to just wait it out until 2016 models hit the lot?

I couldnt get more than 2500 off a TEP w/KDSS. I was around 1700-2400 depending on vehicle. Note: I did not pull the trigger because I couldnt get what I wanted for my trade, so maybe I could have leaned on them a little more, but I doubt it.


What source are quoting for your car value? KBB trade in, private party, retail, etc? Trade in will be lowest and I dont see you getting more than KBB very often, as usually its higher than the market value at auction. I doubt you get much more out of them, forget 2-3k. You could get lucky and shop around and find a dealer that needs to make a deal and hit its numbers late in the month and get more out of them.

Yeah, I figured maybe get them down another 1500 at most and then have them take off the running boards as I would replace those anyway. I used kbb and nada "dealer" trade in as my option. I rated it at good condition. I do feel the trade in is fair but with the low mileage they wouldn't have to wait long for it to move, plus their used lot was running low.

The biggest question I had is an identical 4R on the lot in black and not silver and without running boards was 32,999 sale price.

How would color impact MsRP? He said taking off all dealer options on the silver, the black was still 2k less sticker
 
Go buy it and start enjoying it this summer.

When I ordered my 2013 TE I was able to get 5.6% off of MSRP, good but not great and I could tell they were not going to move.

I think you should look at invoice, not MSRP. I just bought a 2015 Limited @ $300 under invoice which I think is very fair. Most were trying to get $500-$800 over invoice, so I was pleased. I'd take the $14k (sounds more than fair!), and offer them invoice. On my 4R the MSRP was $45,675, and I paid $42,200, that's a 8.2% mark-up; I'm sure they'd be happy as clams to get 10-20%! Of course they also get kick-backs and dealer incentives from Toyota. Just buy it, and don't look back!
 
20% is a pipe dream.

I got 9% which is pretty much the highest percentage off of MSRP I have seen personally. Like others have said, just buy it and enjoy it!
 
Sounds like good deal to me for numbers provided. Financing? Interest rate? Any doc fees imposed? Any dealer accessories?
If it's the one you want - buy it. Selection will probably decrease soon and sure '16 will have price increase and loss of anniversary discount.

My 2014 had the anniversary discount and they carried it over to the 2015 models. They may continue it on the 2016 models also. The 1st 4runner came out in 1984.
 
I got almost $3k off of sticker on my SR5 Premium but I also took a little less on my trade to balance it out. They showed me invoices on their 4runners and the loaded out Limiteds barely have $3400 in them.

If they're offering you pretty much book price for your trade in, and you think that's fair, then go for it. The bonus is that actually saves you more $$ since I believe it comes off the before-tax-price of the new one, so you actually save the $14k + taxes.

Yeah, I did similar with mine and I don't think you're going to do much better than that, certainly not 20%.

(Queue the one-in-a-million smartass that's best buddies with the owner of a dealer and got 30% off, to tell me I'm wrong.....)

But yeah, that's not a bad deal and it seems pretty fair for your trade. In many parts of the country, where supply is short, dealers won't even come down off MSRP.
 
I took a bath on my trade, but have not looked back.
Fast forward 7 months and I am still very happy with my decision.

If you want the 4Runner, just do it.
I would try to haggle as much as you can.
 
MSRP on my SR5 Premium was $38,885. I paid $35,400. (91% of MSRP) And it took me three dealers before I made that deal. I got $17,500 for my trade in which was more than the two other deals were willing to give me for it. I was happy with the deal so I did it and haven't looked back.

Why trade in? Get the best price for the 4runner you want and sell your old one. Resale on runners is so good, sell it and take the extra cash. I got more than that for the very same model with nearly twice the miles. I got to choose the new family for my old friend and I even get to see it once in awhile. I didn't even list it. Someone heard I'd ordered a new ride and asked if I was planning on selling the old one.

Not sure of the market where you are, but low mileage 4runners in good shape bring good money out here. If you've taken good care of it, get that investment back and put in the new ride. Selling a car isn't a big deal. If you want less out of pocket on your new 4runner, there's extra green sitting in your driveway now.
