Buying new 4Runner - Am I being too optimistic on price?

Trade in value

Why trade in? Get the best price for the 4runner you want and sell your old one. Resale on runners is so good, sell it and take the extra cash. ...
... but low mileage 4runners in good shape bring good money out here. If you've taken good care of it, get that investment back and put in the new ride. Selling a car isn't a big deal. If you want less out of pocket on your new 4runner, there's extra green sitting in your driveway now.

The OP should check prices for similar used cars in his area. If KBB is $14,700 and the dealer is offering $14,000 then he/she would have to get a lot more to make up for the sales tax savings off of the new car. Here in So Cal sales tax is around 8.5% to 9%. At 8.5% the tax savings are nearly $1200.

The car deal the OP listed sounds good. Yes, if you plan to add rock sliders ask the dealer to take off the running boards and discount the price by the MSRP for that accessory, less the same percent discount.

Anyway, where I feel I may have more room to help is with my trade. have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner sport. The car only has 65k mileage, nice nitto tires and cosmetically is probably 6-7/10. They offered me 14 (after original offers of 10 and 12), which isn't terrible. Blue book in good condition was 14700.

Thanks in advance

The dealer here in Vegas would put your trade on the lot for $20-21K. Very few used ones come through here. East coast has more so prices are a little lower.

I've found that it generally doesn't work for the purchaser to want to buy new at "wholesale" and negotiate the trade at "top-of-book retail."

That make sense?

Normally I would agree but my point is I'm asking top of book of retail trade in costs because my car is in fact, top dollar retail. No body damage, no mechanical issues and 65k mileage. I'd wager there are probably less than 50 2006 4Runner that fit that bill so I think I am fair. They will ask 16-16500 and probably sell within a month at the most.

I know I probably need to hold back expectations that the markup is as high as I thought. But this is a base sr5 with limited add ons and asking less than 5% off sticker. I still think there is more room.

Thanks everyone for your assistance and feedback

Hey all! I am in the market for a new 4Runner. Looking at a standard sr5. Anyway I've been looking for a few weeks and figured I'd attempt to get one today. So my local dealer has a silver sr5, with running boards, tinted windows and cargo pull out. Pretty standard based on what I've seen. Anyway while talking numbers (for hours) the lowest they could go was $33,500, 2500 off sticker. I figured the invoice for these or their cost is maybe 10-20% of sticker. I think they can do more.

How much more do you think it's possible to squeeze out of this deal? I'd like to maybe work about 2-3 more grand off the total cost. FYI - fees, taxes, etc were quoted around 2-2500.

Would it be worth it to just wait it out until 2016 models hit the lot?

Thanks in advance

My wife and I paid a few hundred less than what you quoted for an SR5 w/o ruunning boards and no cargo shelf. I think you are getting a good deal.

I work at a dealer and paid $750 under invoice for my runner. 20% off will never happen they might laugh at you. Your dealer is giving you a good deal on your trade as well. Before I moved to service when I sold cars and people brought me quotes from KBB which were ridiculous sometimes I said awesome so go get a check from KBB and were good
Also you're saving a good amount in taxes since you're only paying it on the difference

I wasn't criticizing, just trying to present another angle. Clumsily apparently.

The point you make regarding the exclusivity and value of the trade also applies to the new (high demand) 4R. That's all. Certainly I wish the best. It's not a zero sum game, so I hope you are the winner of the -30% !!!

I think you should look at invoice, not MSRP......

This is absolutely wrong! There is no such thing as "invoice". It's a made-up term (by dealers) to make you think it's synonymous with "cost". To believe otherwise is naïve. A dealer's true "cost" is buried deep and is only known to the principals. Under no circumstances are they going to reveal it. They'll tell you the "invoice" so you think you're near cost. It's total horse puckey!

MSRP, while an escalated/phoney price is the only real constant. 5% off msrp is average for an in-demand vehicle like a 4R. 10% off is extremely good. Your negotiating skills and patience will determine the rest. Be careful with the trade, as it's a dealer's favorite obfuscation technique. Know the numbers of each transaction. Remember, the Finance Manager is one of the most highly paid employees in all dealerships. SHOP financing! Beware the FM and his add-ins.

Are you a costco member...?
Are you a AAA member...?
Are there other dealers anyplace close buy....?

You can pit any and all of them against each other for the best price.

When I bought mine 5 years ago, I used AAA, they beat the local dealer for about $3500 in price and beat costco buy $1500. I had to drive about 1hour away to pick it up and in the process I passed about 5 Toyota dealerships, that all had a chance for my business and in the end the best price and service won the deal.

I don't see how a cargo tray and running boards are considered "limited" add ons. Those both can be costly.

I got my 2014 in October for 32,300. The 2015 should drop soon for the 2016s hold off for a bit.

I used USAA to look for trucks that fit what I wanted, the dealers would email me and I just had a copy and past email.

Hello,

I would like to buy a 4 runner in the next few days the only one I will not consider is the limited. I am willing to pay 30k for a SR5 and 35k for a trail. Are you willing to work with me?

I included my contact info, and got a lot of hits. Of course they where just trying to get me in the shop, but I wouldn't move until a they gave me something to work with. I was honestly surprised I got them that low.

When i bought my 4runner last year i also had a trade-in, once i took the trade-in out of the equation i was able to get a nice price on my 4runner and then sold my trade-in private party and got a few extra thousand for it.

I dont know if this was brought up but there may be good examples in here:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...ch-people-paying-2014-4runner-out-door-3.html

Just get one and enjoy it while summer is still here! Trying to save a hundred bucks is killer on a ~$35,000 vehicle

use edmund's build and price, they show a guesstimated invoice based on information they have. its not 100% but its damn close. bring that with you.

Jeeze -> Leave enough for the dealer to pay the rent and the salesman some walkin' around money!

:sobbing:

I sold cars a couple times in my life - It's not easy.......

:yo:

FWIW, if you find one that you really like, get the best deal and buy it. I have bought several new vehicles, and the "stole it from the dealership" feeling wears off a lot quicker than the vehicle feeling. In fact my 2015 Limited was not the best deal I could have asked for, but I watched 2 I wanted drive off while I was negotiating with separate dealerships.

I wanted a very specific vehicle and I do not buy before driving the one I will be purchasing. My personal issue and I pay the price (searching, waiting, traveling etc.)

I once purchased a new truck, not the exact one I wanted but it was a "steal". Man did it get old fast. I hated every time I saw another one like I really wanted on the road.

Life is short, buy what you want at a reasonable price, then enjoy the heck out of it. Nobody I know drives around with the price they paid written on the back window.

Good luck!

I think you are factoring way too much of a profit margin into your 10-20%.

If you are at or near the true Dealer Invoice number, you are getting a fair deal.
Otherwise, you are seeking an unreal amount.
Use your trade and make a fair deal using fair numbers.

just sayin'
