Buying soon, have a couple of questions?

Howdy; great forum you have here.

In a couple of weeks I'll be purchasing a 2012 Trail Edition, and I have a couple of questions.

Can the windows/sunroof be controlled via the keyless entry or factory remote starter remotes?

Can the dealer reprogram the ECM/PCM to allow for bigger tires and/or changes to gearing?

Has anyone re-geared to something over 4:1 after installing 285's? What are your impressions after the gear swap?

And a couple of OT questions which may be better in their own thread, however...

Is there an aftermarket GPS such as a Garmin nuvi or the like which allows topo maps to be loaded, and not just road maps?

Finally... Shoreline Blue or Salsa Red? :bigok:

And as far as GPS goes, I know that some people are using iPads with MotionX GPS to get gps accurate topo on a car friendly sized screen.

I vote shoreline blue but then I'm biased. Make sure you look at people's pictures not the Toyota website when deciding colors. Shoreline blue looks nothing in person like it does online.

Love silver, doesn't show dirt anywhere near as much as other colors. Congrats on buying the TE, KDSS is something I highly recommend for on and off road performance.

Toyota of Richardson (Texas) has told me "no" on this. I'm running 285's, but I'm not willing to go aftermarket for a speedo fix when my dash mounted Garmin gives me accurate speed. Or, you know, I'm lazy. Whichever.

And I vote for Salsa Red. You don't see very many of them, and even fewer Trails.

If you regeared to 4.10 with 285s I think your speedometer would be about the same as with stock tires and gears without recalibrating. It worked out that way on my Jeep Wranglergoing from 3.55 and stock tires to 4.10 and 32s. I think 4.10 gears and 285s would be the perfect setup.

For topo maps you have a lot of options. Most Garmin offerings and similar companies do offer GPS units with topo compatibility, but they are smaller handheld versions.

If you are really serious about your navigation then I would suggest a netbook or Panasonic Toughbook running National Geographic Topo maps or DeLorme Topo 9. Delorme and National Geographic are both really good, but National Geographic is a little more compartmentalized where you have to buy them by the state now, I believe.

You just plug in a small gps puck to a USB and route it where ever you like. This is a popular one: GlobalStat

There is also Overland Navigator which is widely used for 4x4 and overlanding in North America. The next version of Overland Navigator will be available as an iPad app as well in a full version which would eliminate the netbook/laptop aspect. And, it would make for easier (and cheaper) mounting.

Good laptop mounting can be more expensive than the stupid laptop.

The best thing would be a Hema Navigator (click here) but they are not available in the USA yet. When they are, I will be buying one ASAP.

Nobody has 4.10's for our rear diffs yet and it may be awhile. The rear diff was made stronger in 2010 with a all new 8.2" 12 bolt rear end design to replace the anemic 8" 10 bolts found in pre 2010's . Many ,many blown rear ends in pre 2010's over on the FJ forum and some 4th gens over here as they had the same ones.Kudos to Toyota for quietly addressing the weaknesses in the frame and the rear diff on pre 2010's.

My next major mod but going to re-gear with 4.56's and double lockers at the same time so it may be awhile. A few have already re-geared and locked but are not regulars here.

I hadn't even thought about an angle for my iPad as GPS... for the time being I'll keep using my Garmin 60Cx I guess. I can recon alright with a compass and topo map, but having the topos on a GPS is just so point-and-shoot!

In Canada, the TE doesn't come without KDSS; it's part of the package. I find it odd that it's optional in the US actually.

As for the gears, I'd imagine if the new rear end follows into the upcomming Tacoma redesign, that the aftermarket won't be far behind with a solution... though I have a penchant for big, HEAVY tires (Toyo M55 being my favorite, now available as a Nitto HD Grappler in more sizes), so 4.56 isn't out of the question for me.

And the colour?

I'm partial to the red, so far...

It's not a deal breaker for me either way.

GPS: why clutter your space? In-dash Nav is probably one of the best decisions I've made. Doesn't the trail have an Entune/Nav (Multimedia and Navigation) option?

Color: Black is sweet. Personally not a fan of a blue trail... make sure you see the color in person before you buy. Red & Blue are very different then they look online.

Sidebar: I still wish for a White Trail.

NO heated seats for TE.

Kind of a drag on the seats; actually the only option I dearly wish was available was leather. I may go to the aftermarket for that, as it's much easier to live with, having a Labrador Retriever who goes everywhere with me.

With the GPS, it's the ability to use topographic maps that I want, not so much road navigation. Frankly my handheld does this just fine.
