C rated Duratrac more expensive?

Hola

Have to replace some aging tires. Read through every thread imaginable and I think I'm going to go with the Duratracs for the following reasons:

  • C rated version is actually only 45 lbs at 265/75/16 - which is lighter than the K02s
  • KO2 only come in E rating?
  • Want a balance of aggressive look and on-road manners

Only now I found that the C rated duratracs are somehow 40 bucks per tire more expensive than the E rated ones. Am I looking in the wrong place? Any other tires that match the aggressive look/ under 50 lbs?

I know this subject is beat to death, and I've looked at all the usual suspects, Cooper, General, Nitto, all over 50 lbs, and really hard to find a C rated tire. Just want to know if I'm missing anything.

It is really hard to find a C rated tire. That's why I bit the bullet and got E's. Guess what? They are fine. They ride fine at 35 psi and I notice no reduction in performance. They actually improved cornering stability and I have the piece of mind knowing that I have a tough, heavy duty tire.

My current Michelins weigh 40 lbs - the C rated Duratrac is 45 - the E rated one is 52? That seems like a lot of additional rotating unsprung weight. I know these trucks aren't exactly powerhouses off the line, but I'd love to hear some insight on to how much you feel 40 additional lbs of unsprung weight.

So I have a '98, which I think is "medium lift" years. This weekend I'm going to put the OME 906 in the rear with 5100 bilsteins. I'll still be stock up front for another 1-2 months. My current tires will probably last at least that long, will the moderate 906 lift support the 285s? Won't the 285s be heavier?
 
I went up to 17s bc tires are so much cheaper! Seriously look into a set of oem 4runner rims n tires. I paid 820$ for new 17 rims and tires. A set of tires for my 16s was 852$ after tax.

If you're worried about street performance, get a street tire. If you want offroad performance, accept that street performance will suffer.

And frankly, if you're worried about tire price, look for something besides the Duratrac. They're trendy, but they're above average at best in terms of offroad ability. I have Duratracs on the 4Runner and ST Maxx on the F150 and the Coopers cost less and kick the Goodyear tires' butts in every terrain from gravel to snow to sand to mud.

Street performance will suffer - but I can mitigate that by getting a lighter, C-rated tire, which is why I posted the thread. But uh, thanks for the obvious points and the one useful one, which is the ST Maxx is a good option.

I go camping, I roll dirt roads, but no serious trails, and honestly, the Kumho AT51s are another good, cheap option I'm looking at. But sue me, I like the look of the fatter tires and I'm looking for a decent compromise. C rated Duratracs seem to be it. Just wondering if there's something I'm missing and where the best place to buy is.

If you're just cruising around on dirt roads I'd recommend something way less aggressive, the duratracs are loud and pretty heavy. I like the Yokohama Geolander A/T and Cooper A/T3 for mostly street use.
 
I got the Duratracs in C rating 265/75-16 from Discount Tire's Ebay store and they had a promo going for $100 off of 2. Came to less than $150 a tire.

Dont shop at discount tire if you support decriminalization of cannibus. Even if you are not an AZ resident. Owner donated a million to the oppostion. #boycottdiscounttire.
 
Yeah, I was pretty conflicted about it. I did need tires though.

I'm pretty sure we have enough momentum to decriminalize at this point that at best he's helped to delay it a bit. At worst, he's wasted his money. I'm more concerned with the big pharma companies and the alcohol / tobacco companies. Nobody seems to be talking about boycotting them and they're doing the same.

I ran 265/75/16 on a 4 cyl stick 3rd gen, it got 20 mpg.

with the stock radials it got 24 mpg.

The difference between a C and E load on mpg isnt that big, its the diameter and void ratio that kills fuel efficiency... not that they are very fuel efficient anyway.
