Cabin air filter - found a napkin inside?

I just changed out my cabin air filter this weekend, and somehow there was a dunkin donuts napkin inside the housing after I pulled the filter out! this also seems a little fishy, since I pulled the filter a week before, and didn't see it. Then the dealer pulled it during an oil change (I think) and told me it was time to replace it. How in the world would that get in there? also, what is the circular housing below the filter (just curious)?

have you even had dunken donuts recently enough to have a napkin of theres in the truck lol. thats a desperate attempt to make money if the dealership put it in there lol
 
last time, they left an old juice bottle wedged against my drive belt/pulley to catch the oil from the filter change. got a new drive belt for free because of that. I gotta wonder if the same mechanic worked on it this time, and just to piss me off, put the napkin in there. I can't fathom how else it would get in there. Where is the air intake for the heat and a/c ?

I had a mouse find it's way to my filter - so I can see how a napkin can get there.
 
due to past experience youve had with them, it sounds like maybe they would put it there so when you use your air, it feels... clogged? maybe? and then they presume you dont know anything and take it back to them, they charge you a fortune for removing the napkin, and wahlah, they make bank for doing nothing. just my opinion tho.
 
Sounds to me like they checked it and it was clean so they figured if the blocked it with a napkin, you would complain about the air flow and they could sell you another one... Just a though

The napkin provides enhanced filtering for the useless cabin air filter.

Heaven forbid that we might breath unfiltered air. Considering that I've driven in cars with no cabin air filters and with the windows open for the last 56 years, I must be on the verge of death due to unfiltered (fresh) air.

Cabin air filter = another way to steal your money.
 
I cut my own personal cabin filters using a normal house air filter and shape it to the appropriate size. Have no idea how the donut napkin found its way in there....
 
Not sure where the intake is for that thing, but I remember finding something odd in mine when I changed it last...

Seems to me like the worst thing about the filter is that rather than allowing particulates to pass through and be breathed in over time, it catches all the particles and filters all air through that until you replace it. So if you don't change it you're not just getting bits here and there but a constant flow of 'infected' air.
 
I'd rather change a filter element than have to disassemble the dash to unclog an A/C evaporator coil. If you've ever had one apart you wouldn't be questioning the filter's value. An ounce of prevention outweighs a pound of cure.

Like toytwo said, the air filter is more to protect the pumps/fan and other equipment, not so much for improving breathing air quality.

The shop used an old juice bottle to catch oil and left it wedged against your drive belt.

AND YOU TOOK YOUR 4RUNNER BACK FOR MORE SERVICE (ABUSE)

Isnt there another shop in town? Stop supporting those bozos with your money

Changed mine today with about 40k, it looks nasty.
 
I do mine 1x/year - usually beginning of June when I start to use the A/C. They aren't that expensive and relatively easy to change out.

Same here. Rockauto has them for like $3. I just did mine the other day and it looked really nasty.
