Calgary Under Water

Pretty good flood happening here.

Saw some Toyota guys with their lifted trail rigs escorting people through the water and pulling vehicles out.

you can really see it but in the distance is a major road here and it looks like a river.

Friends in High River said lots o water, other people i know in the Okotooks said they are fine.
Is this a combo of lots of rain and snow melt ?

This has been crazy. My wife still has some family up there and her brother has been sending us pics of it all. He sent us a picture of the Saddledome filled up past the 10th row! Good luck, stay safe.

Here's that picture...

Yeah, pretty much. We had a lot of rain over the last month so the ground was already pretty saturated. Then this weather system with lots of moisture came in from the east and stalled over the mountains. All that new rain, plus runoff, plus the ground already being saturated caused the rivers to breach their banks. The largest river around here - the Bow - normally flows between two and three hundred cubic metres per second at this time of year. I believe it peaked last night at around 1700. Thankfully most of the rivers seem to have crested and there's no heavy rain in the forecast.

The most amazing thing is that even with the flash floods that hit some places there have only been three confirmed deaths. Any loss of life is tragic, but it could have been much worse.

Has the stampede been cancelled?

There's no way that'll happen. They've already got pumps ready to go from what I've heard. All the big oil companies in town will probably donate a lot of money for the cleanup too. Sad that they'll probably do more to make sure the stampede opens on time than they will for everyone else who was affected.

Wow. What a shame. Hopefully Lanny McDonald isn't under there somewhere. JK

Thanks for the picture, I was hoping someone got in there to capture that. I heard the water made it to row 14 in the dome, that's a lot of water considering it filled the whole basement as well.

So many volunteers around here it looks like everything is getting better. I know my company offered free engineering services to the city for bridge inspections and things of that nature.

I'm in one of the flood zones right now - rideau park - and if you know anyone in Calgary please tell them to stay out unless they're residents or helping a resident. Traffic in and out is ridiculous because of all the gawkers.
