Has anyone purchased the California Trail Map app, has all good reviews and seems to be an excellent resource but I'm always weary of purchased apps.

That's a pretty steep price for something that looks like it has the same graphics from a 1990's computer game. I would just get a cheap android tablet and download BackCountry Navigator for it. I saw [MENTION=65101]BrianSD_42[/MENTION] running this setup and it seemed to work well.

Wow dude. Like he said. Try out Backcountry Navigator on Android. It's free and the pro version is only $9.99.

If someone has any good tutorials, videos or forums about how to use back county navigator, i would appreciate it. I find it fairly uneasy to use

Topo Maps+
I've been using Topo Maps+ app for iphone. Works great. I opted for the yearly subscription for $14.99. Had the route mapped out for the last socal meet and greet and was able to follow the trails with no issues. Has USGS topo maps, satellite and a number of other terrain maps. Also great is that it's for the entire country and Canada.

I am the creator of the map. It does not use the publicly available data that is used in other maps. I make the map by studying the regulations for each area and in most cases plotting out the trails using satellite imagery because the data doesn’t exist or isn’t geographically accurate. Most maps are based on government data that hasn’t been updated in years. They don’t reflect current regulations and they aren’t geographically accurate. My map includes every trail from Baja to Bishop. It isn’t hit and miss. There is no other map as complete or accurate.
$25 is probably the cheapest off-road accessory that you’ll ever buy. It cost less than a tank of gas for the weekend.
The graphics are no indication of the trail coverage. I’m an off-roader and programmer, not a visual designer. The icons were made at a lower resolution because they were made for use on a Garmin GPS in addition to phones and tablets.
Reviews from people that have used it are the best gauge. Take a look at FaceBook reviews and a few other forums like Race-Dezert.
My map is being used by more than one search and rescue team because it's the most accurate available. Free and cheap aren't usually the best.

I've been eyeing it for awhile now, I know a couple Tacoma guys that have it. I've got the current Garmin 24k topo maps that I use to map out the runs with, but something that already has them mapped out is even better. Still on the fence, but with Death Valley and Mojave Road runs coming up in November and December I may spring for it just so I don't have to map things out myself.

It's more than just trails. It's a complete map that paints the picture. Icons indicate points of interest like old buildings, corrals or palm groves. Areas that are more interesting display at a higher zoom level to make them easier to discover. There is a lot of detail.
