To be brief, I am working on a project and need a little help. Could you (owner of vehicle in the title) slide under your 4runner and take as detailed a picture as you can of the transmission extension housing? The extension housing is the part that joins the transmission to the transfer case. This is also where the transmission mount is located. If you would, could you focus your attention around the bottom of the transfer case and transmission where the extension housing bolts to both.

OK, I have a 99 Tacoma, it is currently running an 02 Tundra 4.7 v8, backed with a 5 speed manual (r150f), and the matching tcase. I bought an 99-00 4runner multi-mode transfer case. I spent a fair amount of time playing with the wiring to get it to play nice with the 01-02 4runner 4wd ECU. Why? Because the 01-02 have electorally activated front diffs. Which I have transplanted into my Tacoma. I have this system ready to go into my truck.


However, I have decided to ditch the 5 speed manual transmission for the 5 speed auto (A750F) found in 03+ 4runner v8s. The problem is that the mating surfaces are different on the newer style tcase vs the older style (96-02) vs (03-??). I have found a Toyota diagram of an extension housing that looks like it may work, but short of trolling the Walmart parking lots and looking at peoples vehicles, and ordering a 350$ part from Toyota, I'm kinda stuck. I believe that the part I might be able to use is found in the 03/04 4runner v6 auto 4x4 applications... I was hoping that someone here with a 4runner matching that description would be nice enough to snap a few pictures and link/send them to me.

Yes, I could just get a newer style case, but I don't know of any tcases that have a shifter, and allow 2wd, 4wd, and Awd.

I sold my 95 Tacoma last winter after driving it daily for 10 years. I miss that truck. I can't even imagine what that engine and transmission would be like.

For that reason alone I'll try to get a good picture of it tomorrow. I don't want to hear any comments about rust though. My 4Runner is a work in progress.

heres what i got. because of the cross member and y pipe it was near impossible to get a clear line of sight to what youre looking for. didn't help that it was pouring rain either

Although, The transfer case to extension housing bolt pattern is only different on 3 holes, and 1 of those 3 is so close to working, I think that 5 mins with a drimel tool will have it on point. The other 5 line up perfectly.

In your opinion, does it look like the bottom of the case is pretty symmetrical side to side, or does it look like it comes to a point on the side that has the front drive shaft. If you are unsure of what I'm talking about, please see the 3rd picture I posted above.


Also, I have been assuming your 4runner has the 4 speed auto, and not the 5 speed auto, Correct?

yes sir i do have the 4 speed, it looks symmetrical to me, i could be incorrect though

When I did the VVTi 1UZ swap on my Multi Mode surf, I took the 4 speed route controlled by after market management instead of using the A650 for exactly the problem that you have encountered.

(A340 on the left A540 on the right)

Good luck and keep us posted! - At least you have the vehicles natively to look at and get parts for!
