Calling All Off-Roaders W/O E-Locker

I went mudding/trail riding with a 3rd gen with open diff. I got stuck got hung up flexed out with right rear wheel on solid ground. So diff lock or limited slip would have gotten me out. As of now i and trying to find a resolution.

You had a limited slip right there on the hand brake.

This speaks to why it's a hard question to answer whether a locker is needed or not. Circumstances and experience matter.

Tried that wasn't enough, your right still not fully experienced. ive had other 4x4s with limited slip and posi. that would have backed out.

I've been wheeling for about a year now, so I don't have that much experience, but wheeling open has definitely taught me a lot. Yea, its nice being able to not have to find the right line every time, but it also makes ya look good making the same climbs the locked guys can! Its challenging, but just fine. I've been thinking about getting a locker, but haven't quite pulled the trigger just yet.

I started with a base sr5 2wd. It sits low so my lines through tge dirt have to count. Most of the time its a biy of a climb up a rock. I was limited to mud sand and steep hills. On the same obstacles my friend has to put his 83 Chevrolet k10 in 4low to climb the same stuff.

I got a elock from the clunkyard and 31x12.5 chunky all terrain tires for a upgrade.

Result my fuel tank is 4 gallons lower. A lot of how the f did you make it here in a 2wd. The best is pissing off my friend because he cant keep up.

Bottom line. Best money I ever spent.

If you got the stock e lock button add wires to the middle pins and tap into the dash lights. The allows the button to light up with the rest of the dash like the tacos

I've done the majority of my wheeling with built jeeps. I have a 4cyl 5sp open open. The more you use your rig the better a driver you will become. Try your trails the way you are set up now. You might surprise yourself. Just cause you have a locker doesn't mean you know how to drive or that your truck will make it over any particular obstacle. For instance in my area there is a section of power lines with these 2 specific obstacles where of you don't know the line you don't make it lockers or not. So it can walk right up open and if you are behind me with lockers not on the right line you are stuck. So for years I didn't have a locker didn't need one. Did I want one? Yes, but I got by fine without until I had enough money. Found one on Craig's list and its been sitting in my garage for about 2 years now.

I added a locker shortly after I started wheeling. I wish I hadn't, because now I rely on it too much and don't pick lines as well as I'd like to. If you get a truck with an elocker, leave it off until you're stuck. You'll be a much better wheeler for it.

Obviously I'm going to have to wheel without a locker for a while, because I don't have one. Hopefully I'll be fine on the trails I like to run (RED CONE).

But later, where can I go to have this done? Who will do this work?

You'll be fine on Red Cone and similar trails. That's a perfect example of where I'd rather have more clearance than more traction.

If your 3rd gen is automatic, you can drive with two feet to help in some cross axle situations, and there's the hand brake, too.

I value my experience learning to wheel on a clearance challenged truck with no rear locker, but similar to KidVermicious, it would have been cool to have learned first without atrac.

I'm looking forward to your reports on how the experience goes for you. Not sure it can be called a downgrade since you'll have more clearance on a smaller rig.

I, for one, am hoping you don't jump into a rear locker too quickly.
