CAM seals question

I just did the timing belt, waterpump & gasket, crank seal, thermostat and gasket, tensioner, pulleys, and V belt on my 07 Limited V/8 4x2.

The shop said they wanted $500 more to do the cam seals because they would have to remove both shafts completely to get to the rear of the shaft to replace them. I've never heard anyone say this here or any other Yota site.

Question: How difficult is it to replace the 2 seals with the engine torn down? Is it necessary to pull the shaft to do this and is this that difficult of a job that would warrant that much more or any more?

It is not necessary to remove the cams but the cam pulleys do have to be removed. This can be hazardous because with the vvt built into the pulley if the cam is put back out of time valves will be bent. If they didn't know exactly what they were doing you may have dodged a bullet not having them done.

Thanks for the info. It looks like it was an OK decision to NOT replace the Cam seals then. The truck is in excellent shape. The belts, tensioners and pulleys all looked very good and like they could have gone many more miles. I just wanted to have some piece of mind and I changed everything now because I'm going to the Grand Canyon, then from L.A. to Houston in it too.

Anyone need 2 new cam seals in the wrapper genuine Toyota? ---make an offer---retail was about $75 on the 2 of them
