Cam/Valve Damage 00 4R

If the old fuel clogged those 3 injectors, why would the other 3 not be as bad? How old was the gas that was sitting in there - did it turn to varnish? It sounds like it may be more of a timing problem since the entire bank on the driver side is missing and the other bank seems to be ok.

My thoughts exactly, since I removed the fuel rail cross over pipe and its clean as new inside both sides, and fuel pumping out is clear, we have timing and or valve problems. Calling in the big dogs on this one to pull back down and start from scratch. Not all is lost, trans and 4x4 are fine, so whats a thousand or more dollars when the truck only has 40k miles?????? New pics and report later this week.

Good luck, it sounds like it will be a great truck with a little love from the pros.

Anyone know anything about aftermarket plugs that dont jive with these trucks? Found a service note on some series plugs making these trucks miss, just a long shot, but swapping plugs before intake comes off.

You should really use NGK or Denso plugs. Anything else may work fine, but also may not. I've had issues with Bosch plugs before - they made my engine miss and they turned the porcelin brown:

The computer we had it hooked up to had a "Service Note" regarding double electrode plugs ONLY, that single electrode plugs may case misfire, seems I read that in a Haynes book also. Any thoughts? That Bosch plug looks rough. NGK is the way to go or Yota plugs.

I worked for Toyota for many years and every vehicle we serviced for engine misfires and/or engine running rough was usually linked to bad aftermarket plugs. If I remember correctly on the regular 6cyl 4runner we have only 15k plugs as opposed to platinum that came in some other trucks, i.e. sequoia, highlander... Toyota's just seem to run best on their own plugs, not aftermarket.
Side note: I know you said the fuel rails were clean but did you pull an actual injector and inspect? My grandfather used to take the injectors and soak them in carb choke cleaner which broke up soot. Also make sure your plug gap is correct.
One other thing. I know you had that bent cam lobe fixed BUT if whatever caused the lobe to bend that much may have also slightly thrown off the balance of the shaft itself. The tiniest alteration in the balance of the shaft will throw the whole system off. I would have probably replaced the shaft, via junkyard. Anyways thats my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Runs Perfect

Well, after much confusion and dead ends we have resolution. Turns out after we puller her back down, the cam was re-installed (in my absence) without taking into consideration it is spring loaded!!!! Mechanic that came in to "do the simple stuff" and install cam, valve covers, and intake after shim was repaced, did not line up the marks on the backside "firewall side" of the camshaft gear. Some how the bolt I put into the provided hole to keep cam in space was removed????? Off by 3 teeth to be exact. Once corrected, truck runs perfect with no miss fire or valve train noise. Stupid over sight and all involved were very apologetic. Good thing toyotas are non-resistance motors. Will post paint damage before and after pics soon. Thanks for all the insight!!!!

Thanks

Finally shut the door on this project!!! Thanks for all the input here, I am a veteran IH8MUD member, but will now join the 3rd Gen ranks here as well since I should be holding on to this rig for a long time as long and no more surprises pop up. She runs, drives and shifts perfect, just the slighest hesitation at take off but it is not noticeable when truck warms up. Going to go ahead and order some new plug wires and plugs from the dealer after a few tanks of gas and re-replace fuel filter. Only code showing now is an occasional bank #1 lean, could be the 1/2 gallon of lucas fuel treatment that has run through it:wow2: Any other suggestions on routine common maintanace I should be aware of???? I know a good deal about Toyotas in general and have owned (for resale) several of these rigs from the 80s to late 90's, but I know forum members can have a wealth of good info.

Thanks again

Paint no too bad

Before and after pics, have not waxed it yet, so may look even better with high speed buff.

Thanks, I am very pleased. After I have the detail shop do a full major clean and buff plus matching Toyo spare tire, total expense to get truck on the road:

$2244.34

Now its time to negotiate the sales price with the "actual" owner, and yes, he did try and "GIVE" me the truck and I declined.

Last time I spoke to him he said he did not want the truck back period!!!! That was the same conversation when he said why dont I just give you the truck, I declined the offer, but should get it for a good price with repairs included.
