can anyone help a confused ORV noob?

i have had my 4runner for about 2 months now. i have really really wanted to go offroading lately, but i'm afraid my truck cant handle it:

it's a 1993 2wd SR5. i'm obviously not the original owner, so i don't know what (if any) modifications have been made to it, with the suspension or what not. it has scrambler tires, and is about 13" off the groud i think.

the 2wd is what concerns me. the spots i would be going to arent that hardcore, with light to medium mud and slightly steep hills. i have drove through mud but haven't had many problems.

what, if any, modifications should i consider making, or should i even go off-road at all? someone i know says a 2wd truck isn't a big deal, and i should be OK.

what do you guys think??

Some aggressive tires, a little suspension lift, and a locker are about it.
Biggest improvement would be a locker.

We all had to learn sometime. No questions are dumb here.

A locker forces your differential to deliver equal power to both wheels. If you are in a situation where you have traction on on tire but not the other, an open diff will transfer more power to the wheel that has LESS traction. There is a stickied thread in this area that fully explains lockers and such.

thanks for the info. about how much do these usually go for? would i even be all that worth it for me, b/c as i siad i'm not really doing anything super hardcore, just light to medium mud at the most, some hills.

Bring a friend. If you get stuck, then you need some mods.

Make sure your friend knows what he's doing (a whole group wouldn't hurt, and besides, thats the fun of offroading anyway)
