can cv axle boot clamps be retightened?

the clamps on the small end of my cv axles seem to have come loose, one side is flinging grease & the other is just starting to, but they are both still there, just came loose for some reason.

can the clamps be retightened? or can new ones be installed? if not i will try to remove them & just use a worm gear for the time being. no noises or clicking as of yet so the axles are still good.

OEM's you would have a hard time tightening probably as theses are a single use crimp fitting and its unlikely the crimp has just stretched out over time.

If i was you, i would go ahead and cut the old ones CAREFULLY (dont damage the boot) and stick on a few worm gear clamps in the interim (or forever like a lot of folks do here).

You may want to get a syringe and put a few ounces of grease in the offending joint as well.

Here is the boot kit (4 clamps 2 bolts and grease for both joints) when you get around to rebuilding your OEM's if you want. you need a special tool to crimp the factory band clamps.

Mine started leaking immediately after my lift. I actually bought these before I lifted anticipating the problem. Worked like a charm. It took a few test drives between tightening them in small increments to avoid over-tightening them and damaging the boot.

yes. boots are not torn, the small end of the boot is just very loose.

i will attempt to cut them off without damaging the boot & just use a worm gear clamp if they will hold ok.

Use some cutting dikes (giggity) to cut them off.

Nah, I've been calling them dikes for the last 20 years. I use them daily at work.

Dikes is the slang name for diagonal pliers, used mainly by electricians for cutting wire for the most part, but I also use mine for many other tasks when working on vehicles.

FYI some people also call them side cutters.
