Can I Do the Tundra Brake Upgrade from AutoZone?

I already purchased some new OE size rotors and pads from AutoZone to do a simple maintenance replacement, but I'm wondering if I will regret not spending a few more bucks and go for the TBU?

My 4Runner is not my DD and is never going to be used for towing or heavy loads so would you still recommend doing the TBU?

If so, could I get away with the 199mm instead of the 231mm?

I would prefer to just exchange the parts at AutoZone rather than returning and going somewhere else, can anyone that has purchased from AZ tell me the correct part numbers and if you are happy with them?

Say you have a 2005 tundra v8 4x4 to get the 231mm. Do some research to make sure they will fit behind the trd wheels.

Parts from Autozone are fine. The Tundra calipers will be Toyota calipers just rebuilt and sold by Autozone. I do recommend that you dont cheap out on the pads and rotors. Go with a good pad that grips well whe cold if you do a lot of wheeling since the pads never ger much heat in them at slower 4x4 speeds. Posi Quiet seires 105 pads are great for just about everything or the 103 series are good as well. Tbe 105 are cermaic pads and the 103 are semi metalic. And get good high carbon rotors the cheap ones dont last as long and will warp easier. I want to do this to my Runner once i need front brakes.

Since I don't tow and I don't want to do any grinding, what Tundra drivetrain do I spec them to for the 199mm setup?

I just did the 199mm TBU with autozone parts yesterday... 2001 tundra v8 4wd

-the calipers are stamped S13WE, and are part numbers C9688 & C9689
-the pads I used were duralast gold DG812
-I went with OEM rotors 435120C011

you can save 20% (online only) by 9/30 with free shipping. that's what I did and saved ~$40. total cost was just under $300.

Which wheels do you have? I did my 231mm TBU with Auto Zone parts, and I didn't do any grinding. I have the stock Toyota "5 star wheels".

A word of caution. If you're going to use Auto Zone parts, do NOT use the CMAX pads. They fade horribly when heated up (ask me how I know). Stick to the Duralast Gold (non-CMAX) instead.

Robb- thanks for the heads-up on the Cmax, that's the 2nd time I've heard that so must be something there - I'll stick with the regular Gold. I have FJ TRD wheels so they may be big enough but was planning on the 199 that I'm pretty sure I won't have any issues with.

Why don't you want to just return them? I got my 231's from advance using one of the 40% of online coupons, ordered online for pickup in store, and did the whole shebang for right around $200. I haven't seen autozone match a 40% off coupon, so for big stuff I only go to advance.

I also have no grinding/rubbing with the 231's and the stock 5-stars.

Also, as had been said by many here in previous TBU threads, don't fret about the 199's vs the 231's. They are both upgrades, and both more than capable ot stopping your 4runner while towing. If you are concerned about the fitment in your rims, then just go with the 199's, or if they're cheaper. For me they weren't because the 231's fit perfectly into one of the 40% coupon tiers.

Where did you find the 40% off coupon? I saw: 20%, 30%, and 35%, but all had a max value of $50.
I'm thinking about making two separate orders to better take advantage of the coupon.

Just look at retailmenot, or any of the coupon code sites. The 40% off coupon is always in the form of $30 off orders of $75, 40 of 100, 20 off 50, etc... Just get creative about placing orders so that you just pass one of these limits by adding in small items, filters, gaskets/grommet, etc. I have almost always been able to add some small useful items that maybe I don't absolutely need, but it's nice to have them, and i end up saving way more with the coupon.

It looks right now that they are mostly just under 40% off, but I have been able to use 40% off alot. I have been able to use the same code over and over by placing separate orders.
