Can I save this new BFG ko2 recently punctured?

New member
Bought these tires back in Jan, now they have 15k miles still plenty of life but recently have one punctured. I did plug it and seems to be holding up. The puncture is slightly on the sidewall. Any experiences with repairs and plugs on sidewall with beefy tires? Can the tire be saved? I could get a new one for $230-300 installed but still i would hate to throw away a brand new tire.

I think you could get by with a patch. It really all depends on how much you plan on throwing at this tire. If it were me and I was that concerned I would have it patched and use it as a spare. I think having it patched is a necessity regardless.
 
Agreed on the liability.... FWIW its clearly a "shoulder" not side wall puncture.

Most people will tell you to replace it because this is where the tread belts bond to the sidewall belts.
The puncture could cause the tread to separate from the inner layers of rubber, which can compromise the tire.

On that note, I've used a pull through patch repair on a shoulder with no issue.
 
Tough call. The patch should be fine. if you buy a new tire you may need to have it shaved anyways because though they seem new, 15,000 miles can wear down the tread enough to cause an imbalance. I know with my Subaru, I need to buy new set of tires when they developed a bubble in one. Replacing one was out of the question as it could mess the AWD system. They say you can replace them in pairs, but I like to play it safe with tires. With a 4Runner, I think that same principal applies.
 
Les Schwab would patch that without a question. I've never had them turn down a patch/plug and I've had some pretty questionable ones. And they do it for free.
 
When it comes to things like tires or brakes, I wouldn't chance it. Just my opinion, but just because someone on here says "Don't worry about it, just patch it." doesn't mean that tire won't fail on you in a month on the highway. It all comes down to you, and how you value safety.
 
as someone already mentioned, buy a new tire, and save your patched up tire, and mount it as a spare.
 
I'd run it. It's not a blow out risk. Worst case - it goes flat. IMO - stick a small patch on the inside and call it a day.
 
There are many more sensible ways in life to save money. This is not one of them. If you’re truely broke then use as a VERY temporary spare.
 
I had a similar puncture in the location on a BFG KM2 tire on a Jeep Wrangler. I patched it. It worked fine for several months and then had a massive blow out going around a corner at 25 mph. Throw the tire way.

Shaved!?!?! where would you get that done and why would you ruin a new tire like that? I've only seen race car tires hot knifed.
 
I've seen shadier stuff. The OCD in me says don't drive on it. BUT, I've honestly seen tire plugs last the life of the tire.
 
Folks thanks for the feedback. I purchased a brand new BFG KO2 285/70R17 Rated E like the others for $242 shipped off tire rack. Planning on replacing the punctured one. Thanks for the advise!

Alright now next vote, should i leave it the punctured bfg ko2 as spare and sell the oem spare tire? Or should i throw the punctured tire away? It only has 15k miles [emoji24]

True that. $250 is a small expense for assurance that i wont have an accident and injure myself and the suv causing further threat and cost...
