In the 2000 model there's a plug besides the battery it's grey. Just unplug it. I did it to mine. No cutting or anything needed.

So if I cut the wire to disable my drl then the lights will no longer cut off when I open the door? Because I'm one of those idiots. lolYou don't need any other switches, wires, etc. All you need is a pair of wire cutters and a little bit of electrical tape. Just cut the specified wire (MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT ONE!) and tape them off. If you want lights during the day again, just turn that knob to the left of your steering wheel!
I also find DRL's useless. But I do leave my lights on during the day. Luckily the Tacoma (and the 01+ 4Runner. Maybe 99-00's, too) has an "idiot proof" feature that turns off the lights automatically when you open the door, so that the "idiot" doesn't drain the battery in the middle of nowhere.
Exactly!! It's a safety feature that does not affect you as a driver. Just leave it alone.

I personally drive with headlights and fog lights all the time,too many distracted young and senior drivers in my neck of the woods. Can't tell you how many times I've had a car almost pulled out in front of me and I know they stop because of my lights. The reason I want to disable my lights sometimes is I like to have my truck running without the lights on when I might be in a remote location,camping etc...

Do Daytime Running Lights Really Make Us Safer?

Earlier this week we published instructions on how to disable daytime running lights on a second generation Tundra, and one of the first comments on that post was, Why disable daytime running lights in the first place?
My initial response was “why not?”, but that’s really not much of an answer. So, I did a little digging into the safety benefits of daytime running lights. Here’s what I found:
1. Daytime running lights aren’t required in the USA, but they’re quite popular in Europe and Canada. Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden all legally require vehicles to have daytime running lights. In the US, GM made daytime running lights a standard safety feature starting in 1999, and a lot of other manufacturers (Lexus, Mercedes, Saab, Subaru, Volvo, VW, etc.) have done so as well.
2. Multiple studies indicate daytime running lights work. According to a series of studies conducted in Norway, Denmark, and Canada, daytime running lights:
Reduced daytime crashes between 6-11%
Reduced left-hand turn crashes by 34%-37%
Reduced crashes involving pedestrians by 28%
When crashes did occur, the severity of the crashes was lower on vehicles with daytime running lights (slower speeds)

This shouldn't be a debate as to why or why not.. should just be how to turn them off like the OP noted on first post. This way when someone is searching for info they don't have to be flooded with opinions they can easily get the info they need. Maybe start a new thread called "DRL - Yes or No - Opinions Please"

Why do any mods that are not always in favor of improving safety? This isn't a thread about why someone wants to do it, it's a how to.
edit; Just realized why I personally HATE DRL...people think their proper lights are on and forget or think it's OK to not turn their full headlights w/marker lights on in the rain, dusk, dawn etc. Been driving for over 22 years and thinking about it do not remember even remotely seeing as many cars lights off as I have in recent years. People can't drive for shit as it is, makes it many times worse if I can't see a car around me in sub-par weather conditions.

I did concede the point to Rock Rat earlier in the thread, but those same people that don't turn their headlights on- they're reading threads about how to "mod" their cars and don't know any better. I'd post the same comment in a thread about blacking out tail lights or similar. Folks will do what they'll do, but doesn't hurt to remind them of something they might not have considered.
Saw an ad for a cayenne yesterday. Guy had 5% tint on all his windows AND blacked out head and tail lights. Good one.

I would love to disconnect the wire but for a different reason. First off, I hunt coyotes for a lot of the local farmers. I will guarantee you any coyote that sees a pair of headlights heading his direction in the early hours of the morning is already in high gear at a couple hundred yards off. Second off, it's a lot easier to ride through a herd of cattle checking on them right before dark with no lights on. They can still see you but they don't get blinded and stand there with that "deer in the headlight look" and don't move. Lol. Just my two cents as a rancher and hunter.
