Can someone explain the trend of "overland" themed wraps I see on 5th gens?

It almost seems like every single 5th gen I see on Instagram has some type of vehicle wrap saying "so and so" overland or "so and so" expeditions. Many of these are usually Tied to a Instagram account only and not a actual company. Can someone explain this to me? Im not knocking it I just don't get it at all. I have only really seem this with 5th gens, im sure other trucks do it but this trend has seemed to take over in the past year or so on this platform, maybe im alone in this but I don't get it...

Why it is a 5th gen thing...?

I did it in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a bit in my '14 F-150... but now I am in a T4R and it seems more comfortable and just able in general, though not the months/years/international thing as above.

I think it is just a consensus term that has become accepted for "camping out of my truck" and will continue to get watered down to the point of Wal-Mart Marketing soon enough.

Personally, I think before I say I have been "overlanding" I needed to have been in 4x4 and traversed a waterway... otherwise it is just pulling off the asphalt on a dirt road haha

Okay, I see that now, I was thinking in the metaphysical sense of wrap, like an aura or feeling... not vinyl!

Funny thing though, in the land of 4Runners (Denver) I actually saw more Fords, Dodges and FJ's with vinyl wraps than 4R's... I will keep my eye out!

Sometimes it is a fad like every civic in the 90s had fart cans for an exhaust. Sometimes people use those graphics to help promote and bost traffic to their YouTube channel or ig accounts
I get a feeling "expedition overland " ( YouTube them if needed) really got the trend started on the 5th gens

^^^what he said. But let us not forget about the "Look at me" factor. Even a stock 4Runner looks like its about to have fun, then add the gear, then add the wrap, NOW its complete. It always cracks me up to see people in rigs that "look" like they can go offroad for days, however, the maxtrax, hi-lift, and jerry cans are all faded from the sun and the truck has never been anywhere more than the local soccer field practice. Its just a look thing.

Side Note - Here in the DFW area, I see a ton of jeeps with all kinds of wraps and mods, but the step bars are so slick from armor all that you cant safely enter the 6" lifted rig and can see that the underside of it has never even seen rain.

It would be interesting to see a poll of what people consider their least valuable addition. Things such as limb risers and snorkels.

Funny, driving around Vegas today, I saw multiple JK' s with overland company logos on the doors, hoods etc.. They weren't together and different companies and was thinking what's with all the overland style JK's?

Yeah I don't know what the deal is... seems like half the 4Runners/Tacomas (2016/2017) I see these days in my area are "Sponsered" (i.e. large wraps and tons of stickers and such)

If a company wants to give me a $3k lift, roof racks, bumpers, etc. I'll put their stickers or wrap on my truck...

the funny thing is they are not sponsored, they are making random brands up with no website just something like NW expeditions. maybe its that thought process that is they put stickers all over their truck they will seem cool?

Well said, reminds me of a Gwagen in town that is all lifted with bumpers and gas cans on the roof and they are all faded and obviously never used. i always just take a peek under the truck to see if its actually used...

People confuse brand ambassador with sponsorship.

If you get free shit you're a brand ambassador. If you get paid money to run free shit you're sponsored. Big difference.

And yeah the amount of overland organizations and wraps is pretty amusing. I didn't realize fancy car camping was that serious.

I consider glamping to be the people who pull an airstream or a full on camper to the woods.

Car camping is a little more simple. Either way it's NOT overlanding. That term has been murdered by people that think putting a roof top tent on a truck and doing a road trip is overlanding.
