Can someone look in their V8 engine bay a/c unit

My A/C light blinks and doesn't work. I looked up the symptom and lots of posts point to a relay under the hood. I've checked it out and swapped the Fog light relay and A/C relay and both seam to function fine.

I haven't used the a/c since my timing belt change in Dec. I suspect it might have to do with the timing belt change and the mechanic. I poked around under the hood and noticed that there is a bracket and wire that are not attached coming off the a/c compressor. The bracket itself is loose and can be lifted off by hand, there is also a black ground wire that isn't connected either. I want to attach the bracket and wire to something but I don't see a mounting hole on the compressor to bolt it down

Have a look at the pic and if someone can show me what theirs looks likes or guide me....that would be great.

That hole you have marked with the arrow is where your loose ground wire should be attached. Mine has a Philips screw that holds the ground and that metal bracket. Did your mechanic break the screw off in the hole?

that wire should ground around that hole you have marked with the arrow, I have a feeling the compressor may come back to life because it (didn't look at the wiring diagram, so its a gut feeling.) Make sure you sand/scuff the eyelet and the mounting surface a little for a good contact, that loose a bit dirty right now.

yup just looked at mine. phillips screw. If he broke the screw off it can be attached to anything metal. But I would keep it on that bracket.

Thanks all for checking so quickly, I just went back to check and it's hell of a clean flush break. I can slightly feel where the screw head broke off and a perfectly round rust halo. Now just gotta figure out if I can drill or use an EZ out in this space.

Looks like you might be able to remove the bracket and maybe just use vise-grips on the back to remove the screw.

Try this first, it will be easier to drill/Ez-Out the screw with the bracket removed. I believe only one or two bolts hold it on.

Unfortunately that metal piece is more of a cover than a bracket. The screw actually goes into the mounting boss on the compressor and the only way to get it drilled out on the truck would be to use a right angle drill. When I replaced my timing belt, I had to use vice grips on the head of that screw to get it out as there was not enough room to get a standard #2 philips screw driver in there.

You might try drilling a new hole in the metal cover right next to the original one then drill and tap the compressor mounting boss and add a new screw. That should work fine. :thumb:

It must be only held on by one screw because I can lift the bracket off easily. With the bracket removed the screw is broken flush with the compressor housing. So yeah, I'll have to use an angled drill then EZ out or drill a new hole. I'm hesitant to drill a new hole in case the housing isn't uniform in thickness.

looks like you're missing a ground screw & thats why it won't turn on.

If it is a "ground wire" you can splice in another length of wire and attach it to another location near by that is a suitable ground. It is much easier than trying to drill out the original broken screw/bolt.

he wouldn't have to drill out anything. It looks like when they did the belt they just didn't but the screw back. all he needs is the screw and it should screw right back in.

BTW I'd go and raise hell at the dealer. It's just a single screw I know, but think if they were to have left something bigger off, like a screw on the fan belt and it came loose and put a hole in the radiator. They should at least give you a free oil change.
