Can Someone Suggest a Lift?

Had this in another thread...

I have an 06 4runner and just purchased 18x9 XD Spy Wheels, with 285/60/18 Nitto Terra's and was told by the guy at Discount that I should be able to fit these tires with no problem.

After putting them on, and leaving the dealer, I realized that I couldn't turn the wheel right or left, at a dead stop.

Their solution was to suggest that I order a different tire, which I don't want to do, or cut out the wheel wells and mud guards, which I had them start doing, but then decided I didn't want to do that either.

So I guess I need a lift...

Based on the tire size and wheel size, do you know what kind of a lift I'd need? How high I'd have to go with those wheels/tires?

Can someone suggest a good one please? Also, what would I expect to be out on total pricing for it?

Additionaly, if you know someone good in the Detroit area, please let me know!

Do you plan to off road at all? If this is just street driven and you want room to clear the tires, something like the daystar 2.5/1.5 should work well.
 
No off-roading, but we do get a lot of snow in Michigan :moping:

Is that lift something I could get on ebay or online?

Also, what should I expect someone to install it for me?

You can get them on Amazon for about $130 I believe, as well as ebay. Mine will be here tomorrow and will be putting it in on Friday. As far as someone installing it, it can be anywhere from $200 up. Good Luck
 
I think the Daystar 2.5/1.5 is your best bet then. It's the cheapest option and should give you the clearance you need. You still may need some minor trimming and it's possible the front mud flaps will have to be removed. I just want to add the disclaimer that this may not take care of 100% of your rubbing. I don't have experience with that particular size, and can't think of anyone running it so this is all just a guess.

Ya, they just didn't tell you that you wouldn't be able to make a turn with no problem. ::wtf:

All serious though, looked on line and they say there about 31.5", so the lift
ARK, sugested should be enough and possable trim.

One last thing, I know the height of the tire won't be an issue with this lift, but do any of you see any issues with the wheel being 18x9 and the tires being 285's?

I'd just hate to spend the money installing this lift and then STILL have issues...

where exactly is it rubbing if you can't even turn it? I doubt 31.5" tires are going to rub (but I could certainly be wrong!). edit: looking at the above link says that is equal to one of the stock sizes... until we know where it's rubbing, I'm not so sure it needs lift.

they are still about 11.5" wide though. what is the offset (bsckspacing) of those wheels?

It rubs in the front part of the wheel well and on the mud guard. They started to cut out parts of the fender and tried to move the front part of the wheel well in, and then after about 2 hours of fiddling with it, wanted to just put me in a smaller tire, of which none of the choices I found too appealing.

I just ordered this Daystar KT09115BK lift kit on Amazon so hopefully that does the job...the only company I could find locally around the Detroit area that will do the labor for me charges about $450.

I was just worried about the width of the tires, which I don't see to many people using 285's in an 18" tire...or even 18x9's...it seems like most 4runner guys are using 18x8.5 and 275's being the highest.

I'd really hate to do all this and then still have to get a different tire...and/or different wheels. :/
 
Or would it help if I switched to a slightly slimmer tire?

Would I be able to run 275/65/18's with the Daystar lift?

Stick with the tire size you want, it isn't like you are trying to stuff 37's in there. The daystar lift is an easy install if you are handy with a wrench, no reason to pay someone to install it.
 
Its the back spacing on the wheels causing most of the rubbing. 275/65/18 will require trimming with the daystar lift. Its possible the 285/60/18s will need trimming also. I had 3" lift with 255/75/17 (32") and had to remove the front mud flaps due to rubbing when i added wheel spacers. Your tires are 1/2" shorter but also wider so I'm going to say even with the lift trimming will still be needed.

Also, $450 to install that daystar kit is insane. Its an easy job that should only take them 2-3 hours.
 
Ark and Kaizer, thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

Basically what you're saying is either tire size should work, either way I'm cutting some of the vehicle out (although not as much) and also, anyone who's somewhat mechanically inclined should be able to do this for me.

So I could take this Daystar lift to any mechanic shop and with the instructions, they should be able to figure it out, right?

Does it come with a good set of instructions, or is that something I'm going to have to find online?

Why not do it yourself? Many install threads on this forum should help and I am sure the instructions are not too tough to follow.

Dig in and try it. You should only need an alignment after you get it in and then you'll be sitting pretty. Also, if you do it yourself then you can pick up some spacers for the cost of the install. Then, watch out tarmac in Detroit!
 
I put the Daystar 2.5-1.5 on my 4runner about 6 mos ago and have enjoyed it.

I can not tell much of a difference in the ride quality up front, however, that is not the case in the rear.

Any suggestions on how to improve ride quality for the rear? 5100s? Or possibly just new rear stock shocks?

Welcome! I'm also from Little Rock btw. When you lift the rear, you lose down travel with stock shocks and I'm guessing that's what you've noticed. Longer rear shocks would help. By your user name I'm assuming you have an 05 sport which means you have xreas. You can't replace just the rear shocks, you'd have to completely remove xreas and replace with a conventional suspension setup (such as bilstein 5100s front/rear). Depending on your mileage it may be time fire new shocks anyway. Did you install the daystar kit our have someone do it? Its possible the shocks were disconnected and lost fluid, which could also be the cause.

Rock Town!!! Ahh, I knew of the XREAs, however I was not aware that it was tied into the rear shocks also.

I am at 101,000 so it is time. What is the life expectancy of the XREAS system usually?

How much labor time/ $ are we looking at to remove xreas/install 5100s? Assuming that is what you would suggest.

Some have had xreas go as early as 60k miles. I replaced mine at 130k and it still had some life left in it. There are a lot of aftermarket options, depends on your budget and how you plan to use it. Install is exactly the same as the install of the spacers, only difference is you'll have to swap over the stock coils to the new shocks if you plan to reuse them.
