cannot get hella's to turn on.. and new pics of spotlight placement

Hey guys, i just put two new hellas on my roof rack and i CANNOT get them to turn on for the life of me.. i cant get power to them or the yellow wire which goes from the relay to the power switch for the lights.. i have the lights mounted (they come with black and purple.. i assume purple is power black is ground?) and i wired the relay with the power coming from the battery (works fine) and then my highbeams (works fine).. but i dont have any power in the yellow wire from the relay to the power switch and no power in the wire which connects directly to the lights.. any thought, let me know if you need more info/pics etc thanks!

did it just like that! so in that diagram the green wire (load) has no power when i test it .. i assume it should? as well my power wire to the lights has no power.. only the battery and the high beams do

Is your switch labeled?, perhaps you have the wirings going in at the prongs just mixed up. How's your ground?

That or the switch is actually bad.

Im having trouble getting a ground for my lights.. i tried connecting them to the bolts holding the L shaped bracket on the roof rack basket.. would this work? I guess my biggest question is if just the lights were not grounded properly would i not be getting any power to the green (load) wire .. or should everything still work (ie the light for the switch lights up etc) or will the lights have to be grounded properly for the whole system to function properly. I have the other wires grounded on the battery

Band ground would cause the light to not work, but a bad ground won't cause you to not have power on the positive wires.

Ground looks doubtful to me. Does relay click when you cycle switch? I had a Hella harness that was assembled wrong. They put the wrong wire colors on the wrong pins. You might want to check that. You should have 12V+ on green wire regardless of load ground, if you use battery negative as test ground, not the bracket.

Yep, got one laying around somewhere.. something i can test?

Here are photos of what ive got wired.. so i have the yellow going from the relay to the switch (cannot get any power on it when i circuit test), then i have the green going from the switch directly to my high beams with an inline fuse, all the grounds grounded (blue wires) and the red going to the battery. The black wire from the relay is for the lights and i cannot get any power on that either..i hate when such simple wiring has me so defeated. I will pick up a new switch tomorrow because i have to go to the hardware store seeing as i tried switching the wires on the switch and blew the inline fuse for the high beam wire

You can use the DMM to test the grounds and to see what is getting power.

Do you have daytime running lights? How are you tapped into the headlights? Can you give us a full diagram of what you have?

I will post some pics tomorrow when i get back to work, what size of fuse should i use if i am running the wire which normally goes to your high/low beams from the switch to my battery instead.. (i had a 2amp 250v) originally so do i need to beef that up? I know you can put an aux fuse box in but could i just wire the switch to the battery instead of high beams so i have constant power? Im thinking a 15amp fuse should be okay? Thanks for the help so far!

thanks for the help guys.. i think it was related to a bad ground but i got it all figured out.. i bought a new switch and relay anyway. So i have 4 (55w) lights rigged to one relay, i've been told that its okay to do so.. but if there were any more than 4 or higher watts then i would need a second relay.. right now i just spliced the power wire for the lights and put a 15amp fuse on each wire going to the pair of lights. Heres some shots!

The brackets on my rack are a little weak so i think i will double them up soon as the lights bounce around a bit even on the concrete.. haha so dont want to imagine when im offroad
