Canoeing the Colorado River

Go to Moab and not wheel? Unpossible!

Unless you have a canoe.

We put in at Dewey Bridge, spent one night at Onion Creek, the next night across the river from the dude ranch, and took out at the commercial ramp just downstream of Salt Wash rapids. The water level was low - the whitewater sections were class 2 maybe 2+ according to the guy with us who knew the river. It gave me and my little flatwater canoe all we could handle, and was a kick in the pants.

I wish we had more time on the upcoming trip (provided I can make it, of course)--I'd bring my kayak and play on the river with you. I think it's safe to say that all our daylight time will be spent on slickrock, not on the Colorado. If I end up moving out that way, we'll have to hook up and go play on the water out there! p.s. I HAVE spent some time in the rapids, back in West Virginia, where we ran all the way up to class 5+ monsters. That was in commercial rafts, not kayaks, although we did get to jump out and swim in some of the class 3 sections--what a blast!

Very mellow for Moab in the summer. I don't think it got above 95 down there in the river channel, and the nights were 60ish.

I think we definitely need to get together on the water! This was only the third time I've had my beast on moving water, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. It'd be a lot easier in a kayak for sure, but I then I couldn't carry my kitchen sink!

I think we could have a good time paddling around out there! Utah is on my list, although probably not towards Salt Lake City--I've actually considered Moab as a possibility. Yeah, I know it's a small place, and not much else nearby, but the surroundings would keep me occupied quite nicely. I checked out rme4x4--that looks like a great site. I may have stumbled on something local, if the owner decides to give it a try--the shop that welded on my sliders and bumper (see separate thread in Classics) is looking for someone to run their parts side of the biz. While I'm NOT thrilled about straight commission pay, I really love the idea of being around the business I've become so passionate about, and will give it a shot if the owner (who is the fabricator/welder, and the only person in the shop right now) decides to. This would also help me take time off for the trip, since he's used to being there solo. We'll see!
