I had noticed around thanksgiving last year that I started the 4Runner once and the gas gauge was all the way past empty. I didn't think I left it totally empty, and the gauge later rose to around 3/8 of a tank where I thought it was. I didn't think much of it, and it didn't happen again for awhile so I chalked it up as an anomaly. Then back in March it did it again, but not repeatedly so I kinda ignored it. Then in May it started doing it regularly. About half the time I started it the gauge would be all the way at empty with the light on, and over the course of a few minutes it would rise up to it's real level.

I did some research and came across a thread from [MENTION=116877]fourfive[/MENTION] where his gauge was acting wonky and he replaced the sending unit along with the hanger for the sending unit and fuel pump. I tried the resetting of the gauge per the TSB for the 99s and that didn't do anything. I ordered the parts and started dropping the tank once they showed up. Having dropped it before I somehow forgot how much of a pain the hoses for all the EVAP stuff they added in 01 is. I got halfway through dropping it and decided I never wanted to do this again.

Great to hear. I'm just under 10k since the repair and my fuel gauge has still been good.

Your rig looked great with the trail rims but man does it look good with those new Ray 10's. Would you say sound deadening the cabin was worth it? I've sound deadened the doors in my rig and am working on the cargo area right now, but I might have to do the cabin area too if it makes a big difference.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to tackle the fuel gauge on mine sometime soon aswell, as I've been having the same issue of it reading on full or empty in the morning and then going back to an accurate reading after driving it a while.

If I ever lift my 4th gen, I'll be placing another order. I think I convinced a couple of the local LC guys to buy your kit too. They were impressed with the quality of the raw parts you provide!

I'm under 1k miles still probably, but that's like 4 or 5 tanks of gas in this thing and still no issue!

Honestly it's hard to say for the sound deadening. I think I remember the doors making a big difference. The floor has a decent bit of sound deadener from the factory which was good to see. I'm sure it made some difference, but if it is appreciable I don't really know since I don't daily it anymore and there were a lot of variables changing then, like the tire setup.

I probably listen to my music too loud anyway so it's hard to tell, but if you're going to clean the carpets, etc. Then I think it's worth doing while you're in there. It only took maybe an hour or two to do all the sound deadening.

Your fuel gauge issue sounds just like mine. My personal opinion is to replace everything on the tank while you're in there, but I tend to lean towards the replace stuff while I'm there camp.

Thanks man! The wheels really do look good, even better in person. If you're bored one Saturday I'd recommend doing the seat cleaning. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes aesthetically and how much newer it looks/feels.

I was looking at a BMW seat swap, but I'm content with my factory seats again now.

Thanks man! I think you'll like the rear control arms, it really made the rear end feel more stable and less squirmy over bumps.

We've all got a list of stuff to do to the truck, you can make it shorter, but you can't finish the list. There's always something.

On the sound deadening, what’s the point of the deep cell foam? Does it just provide better sound deadening/insulation, or is it for extra padding under the carpet? I plan on doing the sound deadening soon, and my job sells fatmat so I can get it for cheap, so I’m trying to decide if I can get away with just that or if I need foam too. I keep seeing people it but I’m not sure what it’s for.

Word. Feel like the PCK should come standard on all toyota trucks. Plan on getting another one for my other 3rd gen. Even if there's no plans to lift, it's there if you need it, kinda like adjustable coilovers.

My only issue with the setup is I cannot get Discount Tire to balance them correctly. It's been there 3 or 4 times and I still get a vibe that comes and goes between 60-70 mph. I put the old wheels and tires back on and confirmed the vibe was not there so I know it is the new tires. I will probably try a different place and see if they can get it right.

Wheel color choice on a black ride looks great. I realize I'm not telling you anything new but getting the balance right can be a hit or multiple misses before a hit & seems to be a little more common when wheel or tire sizes are spec'd further from factory. Had similar experiences from shops in addition to personal experiences when I balanced my own wheels when I worked at Acura in college. Even when I would take my time to get my wheels/tires zeroed, there were still occasions where it took multiple attempts before the vibes were gone. While it's possible to have bad wheels or tires, it seems that getting things dialed is a more common problem. One of many lessons I learned/still learning where even when things look good on paper (or balance machine) doesn't always mean it'll present that way in function.

Thanks! The foam is there to help with sound deadening. I've got pieces in the doors behind the speakers too, based on recommendations I read online. If I remember correctly, the premises is that the fatmat or equivalent dampens the vibrations in the sheet metal, and the foam helps absorb other sound that transmits through. I may be a little off or not explaining well, I bought that foam years ago and still have it so I just keep doing what I've been doing. If you look further back in my build you'll see where I hung a sheet of that foam between the door panel and inner door skin. I also put some on the plastic of the door panels.

That would be pretty neat if it was standard. I may have to move mine down one hole when it's loaded down for a trip. I guess I'll see next time I really put some weight in it. I think it's just about perfectly level as it sits unloaded. It may even have a slight downward slope. I should measure it one day on a flat surface with an angle finder.

I went by the Firestone I've always used for my alignments and talked to the master tech there I've been requesting for years also. He said on something as light as a 3rd gen you need to set the computer to balance a P rated 285 tire vs an LT rated 285 tire. I gave him the road force readings I was getting from discount tire and he said those are probably a little high for a vehicle of this weight and size.

I'll probably have them give balancing a shot and see if it goes away. It drives so good other than that vibe, but I hate vibes on the highway. I'm sure I'm pickier and notice a slight vibe a lot more than the average person who just rolls up to the counter and buys whatever tires the guy there recommends too though...

I love how clean you've kept your 4runner over these years. I'm digging your SCS wheels on there. Black is the perfect contrast color for those gold Ray10s. I will be dropping down from my 35's the next time I buy tires for the 4runner. I picked up a '22 Taco DCSB OR last April and I've been keeping an eye out for modest mods. So far I've just added RCI sliders and tinted the windows. That's the extent of the new 'build'. Hahaha.. My 2002 replacement "changeling" 4Runner is still chugging along and mostly taking my mountain bike and I to the trails.

Thanks man, I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of this one. Trying to plan a trip later this year to go camp and stuff with the dog and stretch the 4Runners legs a little bit since it's not a daily anymore.
