Can't get shifter in rev gear slot 91 4runner

I bought this 4runner a few months back from a fella and the reverse worked just fine. Lately I have not been able to get it in reverse. On occassion I can get it in reverse so the problem must be tempermental. Anybody have any clues as to what the problem might be? Hopefully it is a quick and easy fix, i'm tired of parking on hills.

5 speed or auto?

Sounds like a typical toyota 5speed. Haha. Try putting it in 2nd before going to reverse.

My 5 speed is the same way. Gotta stick it in 2nd and "up and over" to REV. I don't get it either. I think I may have noticed it's easier to put in REV if I take the parking brake off first? Maybe?

i had the same problem and then one day i pushed the clutch harder than usual againts the floor and now it goes right into gear without grinding. try pushing the clutch harder. it worked for my 85...

yeah just try pushing your clutch a lil harder or do what i always do go from 1st 2nd then reverse never failed me yet. my 88 isuzu trooper i have todo the same thing. i think its a common issue nothing to be concerned about
