Can't reach front o2 sensor connector

So I'm following these instructions on replacing the front o2 sensor:

However when I looked for the front o2 sensor, I couldn't find the plug anywhere! I lightly tugged on it and it appears to be attached to something. I cannot see it though because it is above the transmission. Does anyone know how I can get to the front o2 sensor plug?

Cali emissions, I presume. The only way is to unbolt the sensor, pass it over the top, and then the sensor AND connector will hang there ready to be disconnected. If you try and disconnect it with the sensor bolted in place, well, it ain't gonna happen.

Those instructions were written for the old one-cat system--known as Federal or 49-State in '99 and 2000.
