So i have a weird noise on the back, passenger wheel, im thinking on brake shoes or warped drum, because not constant it only happens on very low speeds and on bracking coming to a low speed.

well i cant take the damn drum off, i tried to move the adjuster ring and nothing moves, i tries pulling it a bit and it will only come so far..

Any other ideas??

you have to get in there with a small screw driver, or a pick tool to depress the catch, before the adjuster will unscrew.

if its seized up, you may just have to pry the drum off...
this typically ruins the hardware, and often the shoes. so if you end up going that route, be prepared to replace everything.

before you get to that point, make sure the ebrake isn't pulled.
also take a hammer, and hit the ebrake bell cranks, they OFTEN seize up. when this happens, essentially the park brake is applied, and will make it very difficult to get the drums off.

Put the rear axle on jack stands and chock the front tires. Screw a couple of lugs on just a couple of threads. Start the engine. Put the transmission in gear. Let off the brake and then reapply the brake slowly until the axle comes to a stop. Repeat that until the drum comes off. Been doing it for years. Helluva lot easier than any other method I've ever seen. Key is the lug nuts. Make sure you put them on otherwise you'll be chasing the drum down the street.

Interesting, something new everyday!

Thanks cash money!

No problem. It was shown to me by an old mechanic about a decade ago. If regular idle speed doesn't work then bump the speed up to 10-15mph or go from drive to reverse. Might take a few tries depending on how they are stuck but it works every time. Even on dad's 77 bronco.

Huh, I've never had any troubles removing drums on countless Toyotas, I always just take a decent sized hammer and 3-5 whacks and it's loose and slides right off.

I always use the bolts, but cashmoney's trick sounds interesting!

PS- you can tap out the holes to 3/8-16 without drilling if the M8 strips out. You will have to get it far enough off for the tap pilot to clear the hub flange though

That would be the laugh of the day if I saw that happen.
Not to funny if that heavy drum comes to an abrupt stop.

google search

'3rd gen 4runner remove drum brake'

then go get some m8 x 1.25 bolts

I recently discovered that especially if the drums have significant age and/or rust, you can easily strip those holes. Wish I had known about Cashmoney's trick! :thumb3:

I_bRAD because the brakes are pushing out against the drums when in park. That is why you have to press the brakes when putting your car in park and why your car won't roll in park.

no, that's wrong.

PARK is a function in the transmission, it has nothing to do with the brakes.

In an automatic transmission putting it in 'Park' will basically leave it in 1st gear. The drum brakes will only be engaged if the parking brake is pulled. In a manual it is the same way except it's literally just called 1st gear instead of park. Applying the brakes to put it in drive is just a safety feature to keep you from accidentally putting it into drive and having the vehicle take off when you're not wanting to drive yet.

Well explain why mine didn't come off when in park but as soon as I put it in neutral they came off? No it's not a "coincidence" that's how I've removed the drums on every car I've ever owned. Have any of you guys ever actually TRIED to do this?
