Can't shift out of park

I recently restored the interior of my 97 4runner. In the process I removed the trim around the shifter and removed shifter bezel to clean it. I removed the two small screws that secure the shift handle and when I replaced everything it would not shift out of park. If I remove the two small screws in the handle and push the handle downward it works fine. Brake pedal switch is good, brake lights work and brake fuse is good. So what did I do that I need to correct?

You may have not put back the handle together right. You've got a switch connected to the shifter that lets you shift out of park.

Did you plug all the electronic back in? I just replaced my shifter bushings and I think I’m having an issue with my shifter handle button. I can get past reverse right now on the 98 I’m restoring. I think my electronic solenoid isn’t engaging to move the shifter detent enough because the spring in the shifter is not engaging correctly

When I replaced my broken handle, I realized the plastic plunger the handle activates is threaded in and can affect when the shifter activates.
You could try rotating it 180* either way and see if it helps?

I think There is also a shift interlock solenoid that won’t release the shifter from park unless your foot is on the brake pedal.
