I went to start my 97 4runner today and it would not start. I came back a few hours later and it would start, but is stuttering hard. I went and put gas in it up the road and got there just fine but on my way home I could not go faster than 20 mph and it would not accelerate at all. Then i was trying to park my car and I heard a popping noise that sounded like it was coming from the engine compartment. Not sure what is going on but if you know or have any suggestions for me I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Check the condition of your ignition wires and coil packs. Was it raining earlier and then your car had a chance to dry for a while before it started. Then when it heated maybe was arcing out and misfiring one cylinder. This is just a " Car Talk" quick first guess.
Kind of sounds like the problem I had when mine was out of timing. The timing belt had been changed but the crank shaft pulley was not properly tightened and after a period of a couple of months the timing belt moved and it was out of timing. I had the same exact symptoms as you are describing. I hope it is not that though. I would get it into a mechanic ASAP!

My Runner would pop when I tried to accelerate hard. Shortly afterwards the harmonic balancer broke.
