I recently just bought a 2005 4runner limited, Ive had it for about a week and it just hit 100k today. But something weird happened today, I was walking back to my car, hit the unlock button on my key fob opened the door and the car started. As soon as i put the key in the ignition it turned itself off. This happened on two different occasion today, I was not told by the dealer that this car has any sort of remote starter in it. I was only given the key and key fob. I tried holding the unlock button, hitting it twice and it wont do it again for me. Also, i took it out again this evening and the VSC light, skid light and the light in between the two turned on and stayed on. I pulled over, turned the car off and on again and they went away. Has anyone else had a similar issue?

For remote start to work there must be a key in close proximity to the steering wheel. Did you get all 3 keys when you bought it ? If not, I'll bet it could have a remote start mod and the other key is taped up under some plastic near the ignition switch.

(VT needs remote start !)

I just got 2 keys with the car. I pulled apart the plastic cover under the steering wheel this afternoon. I didnt see anything that looked like a remote starter. So im not quite sure whats going on. I cant get it to do it again so im starting to wonder if I imagined it haha

I bought a used 04 off the lot and it still starts on its own sometimes. real creepy and I have not quite figured it out. I did find out that if I hit the unlock FOUR times in a row, the remote starter turns the car on. Then you need to put the key in the ignition and turn two clicks WITHOUT stepping on the brakes. I think sometimes if you hit the unlock on the doors it counts as one of the 4 unlocks and if you hit the fob or unlock button on the console it will start up making it very creepy and dangerous for someone working on the engine. My alarm also goes off on its own sometimes and I have not quite figured why it does that either. I wish it didnt have any of that but the remote starter is nice in the winter time. Try FOUR times with the unlock and see what happens.

"Unlock x 4" to remote start? I'd like that option. Would be nice hidden glitch, but I dont think it is there in STOCK set up.

I tied it last night around 2am with no luck but waking the gf. Gotta be an aftermarket remote start.

That would be a little scary to me. I park my truck in the garage and I wouldn't want it starting in the middle of the night and wake up dead!:(

InTeresting... Doesn't sound like how the factory remote start works. If yOu have some extra money, have a NON chipped key (just a plain metal key) cut for the car and keep your normal keys in the house and try and start the vehicle with the copy.

Thanks so much for the input guys! I tried it this afternoon, it needs to be hit 4 times! It must have an aftermarket starter, I just didnt see it I guess.

i found mysterious boxes under my dash and appears to either be an audiovox alarm/remote start or just a remote start because one of the boxes has my valet key in it...very curious on how to work it???

Has any one figured out this issue I have a similar problem with vehicle trying to start sometimes with no key in ignition and it stopped doing that. Now it chatters the starter and injectors pulsing with key on (run)position and crank position doesn't change anything ?
