Carborator Problem

My 87' 4Runner with the 22R in it (not E), runs pretty good, but when I push down the gas pedal, there is a brief "stall" and then the carburetor makes a wheezing / gasping sound and then it revs up. I tried removing the air filter to see if that was the problem but that didn't change anything.

Any ideas as to why it's doing that?

It could be any number of things with a 25 year old carb.
Clogged passages, dried out seals creating vacuum leaks, etc.
A rebuild might make a big difference.

carbs dont have the response that EFI has but it does sound like a issue, run a can of seafoam and see if it helps if it does it may be time for a carb rebuild or hopefully the seafoam will fix the issue.
if not look into smoking the carb to check for air leaks.

Accelerator pump

One of the functions of the carburetor is the accelerator pump. It's job is to infuse a squirt of raw gasoline when the throttle plate is opened quickly to compensate for the onrush of air. Once the airflow is steady the normal venturi action of the main jets supplys an adequate amount of fuel. Check by looking down the carburetor with the engine off and see if there is a stream of gas when you open the throttle quickly, if not, the carb needs a new accelerator pump piston or a rebuild as long as it's off the motor. This should fix the stumble on acceleration.
