I'm new to the forum and looking to buy a used 4runner. I know Carfax isn't the end all story of a vehicle, I'm mostly hoping to see the miles match up and the number of owners claimed as well. Anyhow, I'm going tomorrow (sunday) to look at an '04 locally FSBO with 104K miles on it. I've seen that a lot of members on there are pretty cool about running Carfax reports for other members. Can anyone help me out? LMK and I can either post the VIN or PM it. Thank in advance.

Just thought I would post this for you. Historically asking for Carfax's has been frowned upon. But you could be one of the ones that rules do not apply.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I guess all of the threads that came up in the search did not apply to these rules. If I hadn't seen all of those helpful results, I wouldn't have asked in the first place

Tell the seller to supply a carfax. If it is a sticking point, offer to add it into the purchase price if everything checks out.

It's not that hard for the person interested to just spend the $20 to purchase a Carfax. I would suggest having the truck checked by a local mechanic. My neighbor just bought a used car for his kid and the Carfax indicated no accidents. During the first oil change his mechanic was doing a brake inspection and noticed damaged frame rail and odd overspray. It Turns out the truck was in an accident. He is going thru the Carfax guarantee program since it indicated no accident. I am going to be curious to see how it plays out with Carfax.
Rules were designed to minimize issues and provide guidelines. But as you noticed when you searched people don't like rules and do as they please.

I may be wrong but I believe CarFax only guarantees that its reports show reported accidents (accidents reported to police or insurance), otherwise, CarFax would have no way of knowing the vehicle was in an accident unless it inspected every vehicle a CarFax report was run on.It's not that hard for the person interested to just spend the $20 to purchase a Carfax. I'm assuming a similar situation happened with your friend. Very unfortunate situation from him, especially since there was damage to the frame rail. I'd echo your statement about having any vehicle you're considering purchasing inspected by a trustworthy mechanic.

That was my understanding too. But he was able to determine there was an insurance claim and there was something wrong with the reporting. When I find out more I will try to update this post.
