Cargo trailer size?

Hey y'all, so Im in the market for a cargo trailer as I am planning a short move and then a cross country move. The trailer will be used as storage in between.

I thought I was sure that a single axle 6x12 would be a perfect size but am having second thoughts. The next size up is a dual axle 7x14. Is that waaay to big for a 4Runner? The 6x12 is rated to 3500 GVWR while the 7x14 is 7000. I doubt I would have even close to 2000 pounds of stuff so I think I can get by with the 6x12 (and I know the 4Runner limit is 5000). Cost is also a consideration. 6x12 is about $3000 while the 7x14 is $4200 and they are both V-nose so actually have a bit more space.

Thoughts? Any experience you can share? Am I over thinking this?!

I have been looking at the same thing to replace my open utility trailers (6x8 and a 7x14) and also make a part-time stealth camper. 6x12 seems the best compromise for weight vs. cargo volume. I had a double axle 8x14 for farm use a few years ago and it was not fun to tow, even with an F150. Something else to consider is even though the two you are looking at may be the same height (wind resistance) the wider one will cause more drag in addition to the greater weight.

With only 2000# of stuff the 6x12 should be good.

Towed a packed 6x12 dual axle Uhaul over 1500 miles no issues. Didn't weigh it but it was probably 4000+

I'd also stick with a 6x12. I took a double axle 6x12 UHaul loaded the brim across the country from NY to AZ back in 2009 during winter with a 2004 Silverado towing it.

Didn't tax the truck that much for pulling it, but definitely had a to watch what I was doing (had a particularly fun experience in lake effect snow with it on I90 for one thing).

You're not going to need the capacity or weight rating of the 14 footer and you will definitely find the 12 foot easier to tow. Especially if you have not done that much towing in the past.

Go with the 6x12 for sure! I actually have both that I use for work and the 6x12 pulls waaaay better unless you have something pretty serious to pull the 7x14. The 7 ft wide also becomes a problem too as you have to start watching your turns more, where you are in your lane, etc. You will be surprised, if you actually pull both, how much more you will like the 6x12. In my mind it's just more "relaxing" to have behind the vehicle without as much worry of width, wind, etc.

This is another great point. Your 4Runner is about 76 inches wide. Stepping up to a 84 inch wide trailer and dealing with having 4 more inches on both sides of your vehicle is going to be way trickier and issues like staying centered in your lane become way more critical.

I think the 7x14 would also be really tricky to deal with in terms of your standard side mirrors. You really need big trailering mirrors to deal with a 7 foot or wider trailer.

Yes, it is. I tow a 7x16 with a 1 ton diesel dually and you can really tell it's back there. They're like a giant billboard that catches the wind. I couldn't imagine towing one loaded with a 4Runner.
