Castle nuts,tighten or loosen??

Just replaced lower ball joints on my '98 runner.
The chances of the cotter pin holes being lined up with the slots in the castle nuts after torquing seems to be slim. what is the rule of thumb whether to tighten or loosen the nut to line up so cotter pin can be installed?

Snug them down a touch at a time. You are talking 1/6 of a turn. No appreciable difference.

Thanks for y'all's replies & input, I guessed right; I kept tightening until I could insert cotter pins.

I torque whatever it is I'm working on to the desired torque then continue to tighten just enough to put the cotter pin in.

Just keep hitting it with an impact till it lines up, if it breaks off you went too far.



But yeah, get it to around the torque the book calls for and slowly tighten it a bit to get the holes lined up. You shouldn't have too much issue doing that.
