My 4 Runner has 2 catalytic converters. Months ago I had a P0420 code and I ignored it. It was on for over 6 months. Recently 2 exhaust leaks have appeared, one by the weld joint of the second O2 sensor and the other by the weld joint of the downstream flange of the first catalytic converter assembly. I also just replaced the battery about a month ago and the code cleared and has not returned. I assume the first cat conv is bad from the P0420 code. Would that be correct? Also, do you have to replace both converters at the same time? $$$$$$$ Do both usually go bad at the same time? Are the leaks I described above repairable? I love this vehicle but putting about $3000 into it hurts. Is it worth it? Other than this problem, the vehicle is perfect. I am located in Maryland.

Basically what your describing about the condition of the exhaust can cause that code. I would look into fixing the holes first. I would replace the 02 sensors too before I replaced the cat if they are original. If the cat was in such poor condition that it had to be replaced and since your not in California, I would replace the cat with a high flow model and free up a few horsepower
The most expensive cat available was 329 bucks and was stainless steel bolt on from summitracing, which has cheap shipping I found out.
