Catalytic converter protection

Hello,

I've got a 2007 4runner, 2wd, V6. In the SoCal area, catalytic converter theft is super high. I still have my original and want to keep it.

Anyone have solutions to prevent someone going under the vehicle and easily cutting it out? I know there are options to trace it if stolen, ie paint or id/engraving but I'm looking to prevent it getting stolen in the first place.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Cat clamp is what I put on my kids 1999 T4r when she took it to college. Dont we have two cats on the 4th gen? It starts getting expensive. Just lower your deductible on the insurance.

Check out Talon’s Garage, he makes skid plates specifically for our 4th gen and offers custom locking bolts with a special bit required. It’s not 100% preventable but sure does slow down the process of removal. I’m moving back to a populated major city and plan on installing one. It’s a decent price too.

4th Gen cats are pretty tucked up in there and kind of a pain to get to. Im sure if someone really wanted them they could get to them. 3rd gens are right under the vehicle and super easy to cut off compared to ours. Just get wheel well covers and a front skid to help cover them up and prevent anyone from getting up in there. That SHOULD be more than enough.

Talons CAT plate

I literally installed the Talons Garage CAT plates on my 2016 off road premium just yesterday-5/4/22 and it was easy to do and the product looks well made and I feel it will protect the vehicle from CAT theft more so than straps etc. We shall see but it makes me feel good just having it and it serves as a "bash" plate.I did use a clearcoat sealant on it prior to installation to help with discolourization as aluminum tends to "yellow" with age.Hopefully I never have to asertain if it worked or not and the bastards leave my vehicle alone and move on!!

RCI now offers catalytic converter protection/theft shields. Catalytic Guard | 03-Present 4Runner – RCI Off Road

They bolt to their transmission skid plates. Transmission Skid Plate | 03-09 4Runner – RCI Off Road

I’m honestly more concerned about the increasing number of gas thieves drilling the gas tank. At least with the cats cut, I could still move the vehicle. If there’s no gas in the tank, you’re screwed.

oooh not bad for $125. I might get these for peace of mind since I already have the RCI skids
As for the gas tank I think the gas tank skid might help deter some thieves.

Unfortunately, just had thieves this morning drill through slotted holes in the stock tank cover assembly.. came out to drive to work and saw a gas canister underneath my truck being filled.. now have a hole in my tank. Apparently still a problem in the PNW. Looking at options besides buying a new tank! :(
