Only a CB setup in my 4th gen for now but eventually I would like to also have ham radios in both runners. May have to get that handheld though. May be good enough for what I do.

Those little Baofeng radios are a great deal. The stock antenna is garbage, but there are plenty of good inexpensive replacements on Amazon. It's also a pain to program on the fly, so I use it as a backup/monitoring radio. I use a yaesu ft-2900r for most communication which at 75w has an exceptional 2m simplex range. I also use a bendix/king eph radio for a lot of 2m handheld stuff. They are primarily used for wildland fire service, but are extremely durable, have great audio, and can be picked up for cheap on ebay. Although these need to be modified for use on the ham band which can be done with a computer. Most trail communication is done with either cb or frs radios. I primarily use the ham for side talk with any other hams in the group/emergency communication. It gives great peace of mind being on the trail knowing rescue is only a key up away.

I run a Yaesu FT-2800 in the dash. I also picked up a Baofeng dual band radio and am loving that thing. Picked up cables for both it and the Yaesu and do all my programming with a laptop. Both great radio's.
I have a CB, and was going to install it, but honestly we just don't use them that often anymore. The channels are always cluttered with crap and once you get a little bit of distance (like we always do in the desert), you loose contact real quick. I do have a Midland 75 handheld if I need it, with a lil-wil mag mount.

Where did you get the passenger side dash mount that goes behind the center console? Thinking that might be a good solution for a UV5R mount.

Anybody have one of these? Any good? Thinking of ordering one. It's about half the price of the cobra handhelds that I saw.

Its a PanaVise Mount, I cant remember where exactly I bought it, but Summit Racing has them..... PanaVise InDash Custom Dash Mounts 75137-397 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing I just have a belt clip mount hung on it using double stick tape for my phone.

I haven't had any experience with single band mobile antennas since the Radio shack 5/8 wave magmount days, but really like this one for my dual band antenna.

I'm going to have to determine whether I can find a 4runner friendly mount for this antenna since is so heavy. I might have to revert to a mid-sized antenna if I choose to go with a lip mount.

Why do you say that? Is it JUST due to the 75W output?
I personally think a VHF/UHF dual bander is better..... just cuz you can talk to FRS/GMRS if necessary
I like Diamond's antennas. I use their motorized mount, so that I can lower my roof mounted antenna to get into parking garages etc...

I use Yaesu FTM-400D, 50W, dual band, dual monitor, X-band repeat (so I can run it like a localized repeater around camp or to support tactical deployment of something like a SAR incident), VHF can be programmed to hit MURS, VHF business-band, USHPA frequencies, marine frequencies..... UHF can be programmed to hit FRS/GMRS, UHF business-band, etc..

I have the Midland 75-822, and it's been great. you can use it as a stand alone hand unit or connect it to the 12v and magnet antenna and have better range and no batteries to worry about.

Do you have any pictures of the antenna setup? did you ran the cable towards the back?
I am working on there write up and will post soon.
I run the control cable (for the motor) and the antenna cable under the passenger side windshield weather strips.
My antenna lowers horizontally, from the passenger side towards the driver side.

So somewhere you posted you radio is modified, can you explain how,,,I am very interested and the multi band and repeating aspect is very attractive.
By the way, I had a commercial license for a 500 watt repeater, 300 antenna on just about the highest point in Arkansas until 2001...I could reach multiple states and regularly talked to maids, working in St Louis who had in house radios on the same frequency...illegally, but the were a fun bunch of horny women so I never complained...The system was an old tube radio system set for doctors by a Motorola dealer. He sold it to me for almost nothing when cells became efficient when I bough digital mobiles for my farms and a few friends.
My ex-wife, who was responsible for handling all the farm bills from her expense account, failed to pay the fees...it was likely the last repeater license at the power that will ever be granted and was in service to a non-law enforcement agency...wonder why she is my ex?

I nee!d to update my 2m/440 radio. It's ancient. As much as I'd like both a new dual-bander and separate HF radio in my vehicle, I haven't convinced myself its worth the effort to cleanly install and rig out two radios. Time will tell.

Almost any radio you get now can be modified (simple mods) to do open rx/tx. You would have to look into that for your particular model of radio.
Generally, the open tx mod will allow tx at 137-174MHz, and 420-470MHz.
"X-band repeat" is a less supported features, in order to support that, your radio unit basically needs 2 radio inside, one locked onto VHF and one locked onto UHF...... and RX-VHF and TX-UHF; and RX-UHF and RX-VHF... that is pretty demanding on a radio.... but very useful....

As well will I catch heat for running a dual band with only tech license from the ham club cops?
