Tube bumpers are cool, I like them. But they're too "skeletal" for my personal vehicle. I like that heavy, armored look on my 4Runner. Also the other issue with a tube bumper I would see is there are so many open space, while not a big deal on a desert I could see it leaving a vehicle unprotected on a wooded trail. It'd take only one lil stick poked into the radiator at 20mph to ruin your day.

Why would he just throw away the jig he made three years ago even after not selling one for a year, not like it takes up a lot of space? The 5th gen just came out in 2010 and he didn't expect any new potential customers on a vehicle that has just been released even if only after one year?

I see you didn't mention a price still. Also, what it the lead time he gave you? I am interested in this, but I will not beg for one as then it seems you are in the position to be bent over and charged $$$.

You are certainly entitled to prefer tube bumpers, but a nice plate bumper (such as posted in this thread) is neither easier nor cheaper to build than tubing. A guy with a tube bender and a mig welder can knock out a tube bumper pretty easily. To design and build a clean, nice-fitting plate bumper is a ton more work and requires more skills.

Personally, tube bumpers scream "1995" to me, but what do I know.

Yea, if you know how or what it takes to build sh*t these days you would understand. 99.9% of people with those plate bumpers after they have the initial measurements just get those plates laser cut in the masses and is dirt cheap to build. fYI after that it cost less than $100 to build in material when they still charge you suckers over a grand...
 
Not sure what the difference is with plate and tube. Once someone does all of the r&d on any bumper, I would hope it's mass produced so that company could be profitable.

Last I checked, Shrockworks, CBI, BudBuilt, etc... are doing ok in this economy. Your friends jig, however is collecting dust.

People have opinions on what looks good. If someone's doesn't match yours, there's no need to call them suckers.

I never said he threw the jig out. And it is big. Larger than the bumper.
I had to beg because he does mostly FJ and Tacoma stuff and he is pretty covered up with it, even though he owns a 4runner he never has gotten an order for one.

I talked to him last night and he has started on the front skid already. And his bumper is cheaper than the ShrockWorks bumper. About $1300. Lead time is also about half of ShrockWorks. That said, I own ShrockWorks products and just bought a rear for my 2013 from them. If you like plate bumpers SW is the king IMO.

Not sure if you are being a jerk or I missed your point. I do not claim to know CBI, ShrockWorks, DO, Rocktek or any other manufactures financials. I cannot say any of them are doing good or not. Yes Justin's jig was collecting dust, for the same reason ShrockWorks pulled the 5th gen rear bumper from its offerings online. Enough people are just not ready to do this stuff to a 5th gen yet. Justin had the First 5th gen front bumper. Even before ARB was avail in the US.

The jig is being used right now, and when it is needed again Im sure he will use it.

Please remember, when doing tube bumpers, every part of tube is made every time, unlike plate where once the R&D is done its a matter of laser cutting in mass production. I prefer plate bumpers, however the Rocktek bumper has a plate center skid that protects the entire low hanging radiator. It does what I want and I have owned several. Tube is not for everyone, plate is not for everyone, and brush-guards are not for everyone. You get what you want, need, like or can afford. In my case I support a local TX business because I have been blessed enough to be able to afford it. I wish Rocktek made plate bumpers, for now he does not.

So there is no confusion, I am not just a Rocktek customer, Justin and I are close friends and we have done a lot of work together. We are members of the same church and have been friends for over ten years. So I will continue to support my friend, because that is what friends do, even If he decides to make bumpers out of wicker, I will be a supporter.....not a well protected supporter, but a supporter none the less. Lol

I've always liked the rocktek bumper ever since he posted it.

I think the problem was that he never advertised it on the forum. There are plenty of threads about the arb/shrockworks/budbuilt bumpers, but none of the rocktek. I would've bought one way back when I first saw it, if there was any info about it. I remember someone posting it and then a bunch of people asked about it, but never heard back from him.

Lets get back on track here, this threads about CBI not Rocktek.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk and I'm sorry if it came out that way. I was replying to NorthWest about calling anyone that likes to pay for a quality manufactured plate bumper a "sucker".

Lets face it, I hope no one paid $30k-$40k for a truck that was "mass produced". I guess we're all a bunch of suckers. :hug:
 
I contacted them and offered my 2012 but the conversation fizzled out so I didn't think they were interested. Still waiting to see if they came up with anything.
