CBI vs Shrockworks rear plate with tire carrier

I was doing some research on these. Can't find much feedback on the Shrockworks. CBI i found many good reviews, however some did complain about tire wobble. I found a video on it. Does anyone know if this has been corrected? Anyone with a Shrockworks or CBI chime in?

The new shockworks was just released. No one really has the tire carrier yet.

With every company having so many issues with rear bumpers I am waiting to hear feedback on the shockworks also.

Issues rear bumpers have had.

1. If not spaced correctly they can hit the body and cause damage/paint issues since the body can flex.

2. Tire carrier latching issues.

3. Tire wobble and overall noise issues like wind noise when on the highway.

Damn I was really set on the CBI. That wobble is discouraging. I'm sure I would be able to eliminate that wobble with some custom modification, but I don't think the customer should have to do ANY modifying considering the amount of money you're shelling out

Although I liked Shrockworks having their front bumper and sliders
i ultimately went with CBI. Another member on this forum had a bumper that I liked Hungwin Jza80.
I did take some elements from his build to make my own.

All i can say is Nate helped on the build, followed up with some fitment issues and made everything rite, they stood by the product and were super easy to deal with. here is a little short but long winded experience

- Design elements taken were the hoop style for the tire carrier, a design used by FJZ80 bumper builders for a while. reinforced and able to keep the camp table that CBI makes. Nate and company kept is as low as possible cause this is after all my DD and visibility was big for me.
- Asked for a custom ladder build to make access to my whitson Roof rack or when mounted RTT easier. Nate and company even made a Slee Rotopax carrier match there ladder.
- And the big thing was a Dual swing out for Metropolitan living, they kept everything low good visibility and tight so the CHP or local cops wouldn't be too harassing.
- Details were immaculate and so were the welds, the built buckets for Baja design back up lights and you hardly notice them with out me turning them on.

No rattles at all with 285's KO2 mount on rear consider its a dual swing.

- here is a pic no tire just so you guys get an idea, I do recommend the sonoran steel rear body mount and i went old school for the license plate mount since the light bracket sent left a little to be desired.

ok here is more on the CBI

Here it is all mocked up to on ground, insure the fit for lic. Plate and slee rotopax mount it swings so you still have access to ladder..

ladder height and curve to keep tight to body and access to roof easier.
Ohh and side protection that acts as an extra step if needed.

I have a 4xInnovations rear bumper with a tire carrier. It had a little wiggle/jiggle to it as well, but as it turns out it was the rear section of the frame the bumper is bolted to which was wiggling. Those Sonoran Steel rear body mounts firmed everything up nicely. I guess it's a bit weird to be using the body to hold the frame steady back there, but the frame isn't just isn't designed to do much that far back - the stock bumper is bolted to the body.

Hands down Shrockworks...I wouldn't go with any other company. Yeah the wait times are a downer, but if you know that going in you will not be disappointed...their stuff is bulletproof!! And they worked with me to modify the tire carrier to accommodate my setup I added to my Gobi ladder. Plus good luck getting that tire to wobble like I have heard about with the CBI tire carrier...not a knock on CBI, I can't attest to their quality. I like their designs from an aesthetic perspective, but the wobble issue concerned me. Plus I'm apparently a Shrockworks slut! Haha

It's just like installing a body lift.

For the rear it was basically 4 bolts to remove the mount and 2 long ones for the body to frame holder (2 bolts and 1 long per mount x2)

-strip the plastics on the inside to access the top of the bolt
-removed the nuts from the long bolts and used it judge how high and if my jack gave out it would still line back up with the mount.
-Find a nice stable spot to lift the body just enough to put in the new mount one side at a time.
-unbolt the 4 short mount bolts holding it to frame.
-If you have enough to clear the new mounts the old mounts slide rite out
-Probably overly cautions but used a wedge between body and frame when unbolting the rear mount, keeping the space when dealing out mounts and tighting in the new mounts
-lower body and used the bolts to line up everything and as soon possible got the nut on Then completely lowered the body. Then tightened up everything

PB blaster and the ratchetin wretchs are your friends with the tigh space
All in all probably added an extra hour to bumper instal

Was probably a little easier from me since the whole rear bumper off for the chi instal for reference the pic below should give you an idea of the process. the exhaust side had a little less space to work with.

the wings on the frame are where the mounts are located. (just above the exhaust tip passages side for reference)

Shrockworks all the way from my research. No rattles, no broken welds. I just cant afford to buy one this year. Hopefully next springs group buy.:loco:

I've had the Shrockworks rear bumper with carrier for about 2 year now. It's been a beast and I've towed trailers too heavy, dropped off huge rocks directly onto it, and been an uncaring butthole in general to it. It hasn't given me a single issue. Only thing I don't really like is that it is quite big and heavy. Also when my tires were new (285/75R16) they would just barely rub the rear bumper on full stuff.... So when I go to 35s I'll be cutting the "wings" of the bumper back a bit. I wish they had slimmed it down a bit and given more fender well clearance.

I have several friends with the CBI. Its a great looking bumper. The tire carrier is definitely built flimsy in comparison to the Shrockworks. There is the wobble you already mentioned but if you get into driving any stupid stuff that will potentially drag your spare tire it will likely bend.

Here is a buddy of mine with the CBI in Moab showing what I'm talking about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myDUPEcr84U

The bending carrier left a sizeable dent in the rear hatch of his 4runner and he has since cut off the carrier and had the whole thing redone.
I drove the same line (my truck is in the video parked behind him to the side), drug my tire the same way, and the tire just got drag marks on it. The carrier barely flexed.

Really you can go wrong with either and it kinda depends what look you want, what wait time you want, and whats important to you.
Just sharing some observations I've had owning one and wheeling often with someone with the other.

for what its worth i love my CBI as GSP stated the rear tire "wobble" isnt a big deal, and if you are *****ing about that, then you probably should be driving something other than a 3rd gen 4runner -probably a new lexus lx570 or rangerover. i have used my bumper quite a bit and its held up remarkably well.

if i were to do it again tomorrow i would only change the latching mech on the CBI -i got the old style and i like their new style better, otherwise it would all be the same.

I have a shrock without the tire carrier. One thing that really stands out after installation is the bulk of the side wings. The sides hang down just as much, if not more, than a stock bumper. The quality is awesome, but functionally and aesthetically it would be nice if the sides tapered up towards the rear like the cbi hybrid.
