About a year ago here on T4R, there was a discussion on this and I pointed out that usage of the center diff lock should be restricted to slick surfaces to prevent damage. My comment was rather unpopular, as others felt that the center diff should be used during any and all off-roading. With that said, I have not encountered anyone actually experiencing problems when keeping the center diff locked during their entire offroad excursion, so maybe it is more forgiving than I thought.
Regardless, I will continue to be very selective about when I lock the center diff.
