Central VA Trails 3.0

Well as the title says Central Va Trails 3.0. That can only mean one thing. We are going in the woods again!! I am thinking later this month or in October once it cools off. Also I am thinking of PMR since some of us didnt go last time. Ill post a poll and go from there! :guitar2: :driving:

I voted both times because I am open to either time. Im leaning more towards October just so I can get things done on the truck I need to

Some of the guys here in the Valley are also talking about a Uwharrie trip in early October...will post details as they come about. Also in early October is the Cove camping/offroad trip near Winchester thst a bunch of folks are going...check out the entire thread on it. Lastly, for trails around here, I say Flagpole (you can play on both Union Mill or Switzer Dam trails or both on the way to the top)

Big Levels / Bald Mountain...which exits near the top of Shoe Creek (may that trail rest in peace). Ive never run this one before but hear its pretty good.

I'd rather go somewhere else than back to flagpole. Doesn't have to be peters mill though. October might be tricky for me though, the company I work for is moving to a new building that month and I've told them I'd be available on weekends to help. The exact dates just aren't firmed up yet due to renovations at the new location.

So the trail scratches last time was one part of the trip I really did not enjoy. Nor the hours buffing them out the next day. I work at a sign/display company and they use something called pre-mask to transfer cut vinyl letters from the original sheet of vinyl to the surface it gets installed onto. Its basically a semi-transparent painters tape just in a wider roll and its designed to not leave a residue. So I'm looking into buying a roll of that stuff as a quick, temporary armor to put on my fenders and doors. Peel it off when I'm done and nothing to worry about. Anyone else interested in something like that?

That actually sounds like a pretty good idea for pinstripe protection for those that need it on the darker colors that show..

Over the years I've developed the mantra that each pinstripe, scuff, trail scar, etc. tells a story,,,, hopefully a good one! I've always tried to have my trail rigs in colors that minimize the effect. My Thundercloud '02 does a great job in hiding the marks, and I specifically ordered the new one in Super White for this reason as well.

Where do y'all go in the RVA area? I see a ton of lifted and modded SUVs around RVA, but being new to the area, I haven't found any legal places to go. I'm definitely down for a meetup and wanna start getting my 4runner muddy

There aren't really any legal places around here. Thats why we are planning to go to the mountains where there are places to go. Better scenery too.

I wanted to go on the last trip, but had to go visit the gf at the beach that weekend before I started classes. As long as the trip isn't the weekend of 10th in October I should be able to go this time.

The wife and I did some exploring today in Craig Co. We stopped at the Fenwick Mine trail (walking trail) to have a look around. After we got back to the truck we decided to keep driving further up the mountain. Turns out there is a jeep trail that runs for miles. We spent several hours riding trails and exploring which is something we haven't done for awhile. I believe the area is called Bald Mountain. Nothing too crazy but it was perfect for stock rigs. I uploaded a few pics in the 4th gen section but here is another just to give you an idea of the terrain.

Checking in Fella's. In looking at my schedule I am on the road in October a ton, plus a big camping trip to crabtree falls the first weekend, plus my daughter having softball EVERY Saturday. I am going to have to let you guys make some decisions here and just see how it works out unfortunately. Down to do whatever.

For those of you who didn't make it to Peter's mill, here is my $.02. Peters mill was much shorter and definitely different but I just don't know if it is enough of a trail to support driving a distance JUST for it alone. It did however have some really fun sections that were almost moto like - rollers, berms and the scenery although flat was slightly more "open" and enjoyable. The middle section at the top was annoying as hell with some REALLY jagged baby heads that were pretty rough. There were a few play spots but most of the side trails are definitely marked off. There was also a small pond spot about half way through. Beware that there was an extremely tight section of the trail where Mt Laurel had closed in and it was worse for pinstripes than anywhere on Flagpole. It would be real nice to hit this trail if there was something else up closer that way to hit. Dont get me wrong, although it is a fun trail doing it alone would have you done in three or so hours asking yourself "What's next."

Flagpole was definitely more of an experience and was way more dynamic without being too crazy. From what I have read there were at least two other trails right there that we didn't even touch, and we passed a few play spots in the beginning.

Tough call, but I wanted to throw it all out there for you guys in case it helps in the decision making process. I also know they are planning a clean up of Big Levels on Oct 3 so it will be not quite as tight here shortly. I hear that trail is pretty tame, but pretty scenic. Let's all pray they open Shoe Creek back up at some point as well.
