Central Va Trails?

Are there any specific trails you guys want to run? Assuming we're interested in going to the GWNF.

hearno mentioned to me a while back that he liked the Flag Pole Run. I never got to try it during my recent visit to GWNF so I would like to do that, but I'm content to just do some exploring. GWNF is gorgeous and I just love driving through it and soaking it all in.

See hearno's post here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-roading/196023-gwnf-june-27-28-a.html

Ever since I heard about Mount Rogers, I've always wanted to visit, but that is DEEP south VA.

Id be interestes in flag pole. Ive done taskers gap/ peters mill. If you want to go to Mount Rogers you might as well pass it and go to Uwharrie in North Carolina. But id go to any trail we decided on.

Thanks theBEAR for heads-up. Depending on dates, I might be able to join. Keep me posted. Thanks.

If there is room for one more I'm definitely interested in joining this expedition. Just give me a heads up on the day. Weekends obviously work out the best, but I would not be opposed to taking a day or two off work.

I'll be in Asheville for the Overland East Expo in October as well.

I'm not sure if he is interested because we beat his rig up pretty good on the last time out, but if he is we may have quite a crew. Salman

I have never been off roading since I just got my runner 2 months ago so i am looking for y'alls recommendations!

This is some info I requested via a FB page in regards to Flap Pole Knob.

"THis trail will be most enjoyed by stock trucks ~ lifted locked on 33's it is just another forest service road. But for stockers.... From Union springs to Flagpole there are (3-4) places where 4wd will be appreciated especially if it is snowing / raining. There is a rocky / step ledge down hill in the bottom / more technical to run this obsticle from Flag pole to Union springs. Running US to Flag pole there is another up hill just past the bottom with pillow sized rocks up top and holes spun out from open diffs (some stockish 4-wds get stuck here). I've also seen folks spin out and get stuck coming up the hill from Union springs to the clearing / overlook (what most folks call flag pole). If you run up hill toward Redish Knobb there is a stair step hill just before Skidmore trail ~ This stair step hill is defiantly not something the average soccer mom would drive up and could give a stock Cherokee a good work out in the wrong conditions."

With that being said Im thinking peters mill/ tasters gap might be a better off roading experience. It was my first run in the area and it made me first, question my trucks ability and second, made me gain a ton of confidence in what the 4runner is able to do.

Bear..I'm also going to the Overland Expo near Asheville! I just invited a friend from Lynchburg who has a Wrangler.

I have a stock 15 Trail but am ready to go for any trail we decide on in August! Keep me posted!

4gin007 how long is the peters mill run? I've heard the Flag Pole Run is 4-5 hours. Thanks for the Uwharrie suggestion as well.

Is 8/22/15 a good date for everybody? That gives us 3 weeks to work out the kinks in our plan. Since I have been to neither of these trails, I'm going to let the more experienced Runners who have been there make the final call. As long as we're not rock crawling, I think we'll be ok. I've always been impressed with my stock 4Runner can get through . . . and I've got plenty of recovery gear for those who do get stuck.

Peters Mill took us about 4 to 5 hrs also. That is with a decent amount of stops to take in the scenery and try different finger trails off the main trail. There was 3 of us at the time, my 4runner, a friends 4runner and get this, a VW toureg, and we all made it through just fine. Its mostly a rocky trail, hardly any mud except where the puddles are, which I took advantage of to get my rig muddy. I think we should start a pole with two diff trails and three different dates and see what becomes of it.

@anyone really

well i am game for whatever just let me know the date that is chosen and i will check my schedule for work. I usually work 1 saturday a month. I will have my fluids changed by then.

pending of everyones location we can meet up at Toyota in Charlottesville to head out to either peters mill or flagpole knob

August 22nd is good for me. A Charlottesville meetup location makes sense to me.

How necessary are a/t tires on the trails that people have mentioned. Sadly I'm still on stock h/t tires.

I would need to ask for the time off now if that weekend is the plan.

Somehow... I'm actually off that weekend so it absolutely works for me. I'm in. Flag Pole would be fun with a group.

August 22 works for me also.
brianhuntRVA we can meet up here in the area before we head up to Charlottesville, along with the other guys from around rva.

Hey All (sorry if I missed anybody. It was not intentional) I posted a poll here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-roading/202418-central-va-trails-2-0-a.html

So lets continue the discussion there. If there are those of you who are not available on 8/22/15 just throw another date on the calendar. I'm pretty sure you will have more than a few people free on that day as well. Heck, I would be up for going more than once. I love the GWNF!
