Changed brake pads and not the breaks grab

I put new break pads on my 86 22RE and the test drive wasn't what I expected. The peddle is hard at the top. You have to press hard to get some results and when you press harder the drivers side breaks grab and the vehicle skids. What has changed? What do I need to do to correct the problem.

A hard pedal normally means your vacuum boost isn't working, but I don't know why it would suddenly fail just because you put new pads on. Are you sure the pads you used aren't too thick?

Try bleeding the entier system and see what happens. Brakes can be weird when they aren't bled right.
