Changing Air Filter

Sorry to post such a basic question but have 27 K now on my 2006 V6 and went to change the air filter. All I could find was Purolator. Fram apparently does not make one for V6. Anyhow, I popped open the casing but can't figure out how to remove old filter. It seems to be wedged in tight and nothing to grab to pull it out. What's the secret?

Pull hard!!

Actually, that's what I had to do the first time I pulled it out. Just stand on the passenger side and be sure to pull straight and away from the housing.

And you're right - Purolator was the only brand I could find other than Toyota.

Pull hard on what?? There's nothing I can find to get a grip on. Do I jab it with screwdriver like people used to remove oil filters?

Puralators are better than Fram by far. I've been using Puralator PureOne filters for over 9 years now.

I opened up the box of the Puralator and the Fram for the V8 and the filter element looked identical but there was no Fram for the V6. Getting back to the problem at hand, nothing to pull on and I couldn't even get a screwdriver between the filter and housing to try to pry it out. Any tips here?

I think I see what is confusing you. Don't be sorry to ask this because others have been confused in the past.
Are you trying to replace the filter I'm pointing at (with the red arrow) in the pic? If so, then this is the non-servicable emissions system charcoal filter. Leave it alone and go to my next post.

This is the filter you want to change. It pops right out by gripping the edge (red arrow.)

Now I get it. I'm looking in the wrong direction once I un-buckle the housing. Hope I didn't chew up that emission charcoal filter too bad while trying to remove it. Thanks much.

Yeah... how many of us will admit that we tried to pull the wrong one out??

Yup. Just got it changed thanks to the pics. Really makes you feel stupid, however, you pretty much have to lean over the fender to unbuckle the housing and from that vantage point, the only thing you see that looks and is shaped like the air filter, won't come out.
