Changing Cv Axles tomorrow

Sorry to be long winded here but I'm trying to be as detailed as possible:

I've already posted this in a different thread but theres way more activity here so I'll post it here because im plannig on doing this tomorrow since its my only day off.

I have a 2003 Sport Edition V8 4x4, it is the all time 4 wheel drive and was stock until a few months ago when I added a daystar 2.5/1.5 spacer lift. I immediately got an alighnment found out the lower control arm bushings and cam bolts were seized in place so after ordering moog replacements I had them installed and the alignhment done. My wife drove it home and didnt notice anything. That night I climbed under to check out the new parts and grease the drive shaft. While there I greased the new greasable cam bolts as well and it sat in the garage for a few days. The next time I drove it I started noticing a popping noise coming from the front end. After driving it for a while, looking under it, jiggeling, prying, checking bolts and everything else, the only thing I could find is that the cam bolts were a little loose. Took it back, they tightened everything up again and re did the alignment. The popping noise stopped for about a day and came back.

I have since swapped the daystar kit and a 170K mile xreas for a new TRD Tacoma suspension and got an alignment again and again it stopped for a short time but returns. I have had the shop check ball joints and everything they can to try to identify the problem but they can't find any of those componets at fault and say they are all in good condition.

When the lift was put on the axle boots did leak grease until I could get the new straps in and put on which fixed that. Is it possible that they lost to much grease and that is the cause? Is it possible that since the axles have 170K miles of wear on them and then the increased angle from the lift is causing it?

I can sit still in park, drive or reverse and turn the wheels all i want with not sound but as soon as I start to move with them turned its starts. It is primarily in reverse but has happened moving forward as well. The best way I can describe it is a metal binding pop. It definately sounds to be coming from the middle section of the front end around where the stearing and cv axels are located but it is very hard to isolate the location because it only does it as you move slowly. I have had a very similar sound come from the front wheel u-joints in the two straight axle trucks I have had in the past when they were in 4 low and turning.

Do you guys think changing the axels is the correct step?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt, it is really hard to say if that is the thing to do. When a cv goes out they typically make a constant clicking pop noise at low speeds especially when turning hard. Needless to say I have been tracking down a single pop noise from the front end to no avail and it is leading me to believe it may be my cv's.

One thing for you to check, make sure the LCA cam bolts are all torqed down properly to 100lbs of torque. Before I changed my LCA bushings they were making popping noises as you described. Also, make sure the sway bar and other suspension components are all tight.

Might be moot, given that you're planning on doing the work today, but I had a CV axle replaced after installing my UCAs. The boot tore either on my trip back from Cali or just before, but I didn't notice it until the upper ball joint (which needed replacing anyway) replaced.

I'm used to a constant clicking noise or popping feeling coming from the front end when turning, especially at slow speeds, being indicative of a bad CV axle. However, in this case, I only had issues when backing out of my garage. My driveway is at a pretty steep grade, so there's a lot of transition just getting to the street. Popping as the back end dropped and then as I hit the street and leveled out again was the only symptom.

I'm assuming you'll find out whether or not the CV was the culprit after your work today, but figured I'd kick in my $0.02.

Welp did it today. It was really simple to do BUT it didn't fix the noise. Not a total waste though. The grease that was in the joints as definitely past it's prime I think. It was a very nice primer gray color with the consistency of warm syrup. I'm gonna remove the front sway bar and see if that eliminates the sound. If so I'll give that an overhaul if not then I guess it's tie rod ends and ball joints

Well I dropped the sway bar today in hopes it was that. Still popping. I'm really starting to think that it's the lca bushings or cam bolts that are the culprits. They fell pretty tight but idk. I'm thinking about taking then out cleaning any grease out then putting them back in with a liberal amount of lock tite and immediately going to a different alignment shop for a life time alignment.

Any chance that the springs are not seated properly? Or the top hats are loose or loosened up?

I thought about this but everything looks good, all the nutsbolts are tight and it did it with my stock xreas suspension and spacers and now with my new tacoma suspension. I stopped by the firestone place earlier and made an appointment to have then check it all out monday. I figured it couldn't hurt to have a second opinion and they also bounced some ideas for me to check. He highly reccomended I take a grease needle and try to grease the ball joints. He said they may still be good but the grease may be dry so I'm gonna try that tomorrow and take her for a spin. I really feel like its going to be something with those dang cam bolts though. I may have to just break down and try replacing them with some from toyota. I went with moog over toyota because they are greasable but thinking that may not have been as good of an idea as it sounded.

If you're talking about the lower ball joints, I wouldn't grease them; being that they're sealed and maintenance-free. Puncturing the boot would only be counterproductive IMO. If you don't see grease leaking from them, I wouldn't worry about greasing them. Have you tried greasing the steering bump stops?

It would be the lower ball joints, there is some dryed out grease around the base of the boots. He said to just slide the needle in between the boot and the metal. I have not tried the bump stops but will. Either way I'm still going to take it in monday and have them check it out really well. If two shops both say all of that stuff looks good then I don't want to replace them. We shall see I guess.

I've been researching and am having a hard time finding much on this but it looks as though the ball joints can be pressed out and in. Is this correct or does the entire lca/uca have to be replaced? If they can be pressed in and out I may go ahead and do it just for the sake of knowing its good to go.

Yes you can replace just the ball joints but like you said, you'd need a press. Lots of people like to replace the whole LCA because it comes fully assembled with new ball joints and bushings, and you can get new cam bolts with it. But since you already have new bushings and cams it may not be worth it.

Greased the steering stops this morning. Didn't help so sway bar is back on and it's going to Firestone Tuesday morning. I'm fully expecting ball joints but just want confirmation.

What did the issue end up being?

The shop I was going to never really wrenched the cam bolts and they kept working loose and causing the popping. Once a different place figured out they were losse and really tightened them down it never made another sound.

After your experience would you recommend the Moog cam bolts?
