Changing to the Synthetic Engine Oil.

About 5 months ago, I wanted to change from a normal engine oil to Mobile synthetic engine oil at the dealership. At that time, my car had about 40k km (about 25000miles). The rep said that for me to change from normal engine oil to the synthetic oil, I have to do the engine flush to get rid off all the old oil before they put the synthetic oil in. Is this true? Because I have never heard of this before. And he also said that once you put the synthetic, it is recommomend that you do not go back to normal engine oil. Is this true?

I don't know about the flushing needed to switch to synthetic, i never did that nor the shop that did my car before...

A lot of people would agree that once you go synthetic it is not recomended to go back to regular oil, and i don't see the reason why as well... i did a switch once on my civic (from synthetic to regular oil) only because my dad was using it back then and he does not want to pay so much for an oil change (yeah he's cheap).. what i did though was synthetic then synthetic blend before regular oil... it's like i went through a phase instead of going back directly to regular oil from synthetic

As long as you kept up on your oil changes you should have no problem going to a syn-oil without doing a flush first.

I had a Volvo 960 that I bought with 25K on it and did the swich and ran it for 200K with Mobil 1 and I changed it every 7.5K without ever a problem.

I've done it, no difficulty. And the dealership had no issues with it. So the place that told the OP that they needed to flush the engine first sounds like they were hoping you'd be naive enough to believe them.

After buying my wife an new Highlander in 2005, I switched out the oil for synthetic after having I believe 3,000 miles on it.

My motorcycle, I switched out the oil after 100 miles, 300 miles, and then at 1000 I switched out for full synthetic.

There are lots of little metal pieces in the oil on new vehicles. I like to get them out as soon as possible but not too soon before the engine is somewhat broken in.

I'll probably wait til just after the break in period on my new 4R and then go full synthetic.


Yeah, you don't need to "flush" out the old oil. The synthetic will do that for you over the next couple oil changes.

Most synthetic oils say that you can mix it with dino, but that it will shorten the time between oil changes. So it would seem that there is really no need to flush a system in an effort to eliminate any residual petroleum.

I am thinking about changing the oil by myself. Currently I am usign Mobile 5w30 synthetic (That's what dealer put in). Shoud I keep the same 5w30 formula or change it? My car has about 30k miles. I do not tow, weather here in Vancouver do not get that hot (100F) doing the summer time.

Update: The 5W30 is fine for my V8 Runner and I would stick with it.

I began using Mobil 1 in my 1994 Trans Am GT. It is in my 98 GMC Jimmy (230,000 mi), my 97 Maxum 2350 Ski Boat, my motor home, my 03 Anniversary Edition Corvette and my 4Runner.

I believe in the lubrication properties and its ability to suspend particles that are later dranied. It is amazing to see the inside of an engine that has had a steady diet of Mobil 1. There is NO sludge or carbon, and very little discoloration. GREAT STUFF

I have switched to Mobil 1 all the vehicles I've owned in the past 10 years.

As ALLEGRO said - when my pos Mazda 626 blew a head gasket the mechanic was amazed how clean the darn think is after 50K diet on Mobil 1 (and about 50K on other crap before that).

The only problem I have is that I don't do the oil change myself and I don't have a place I can really trust. So even if I buy the stuff and ask them to use it - I have no control over the process - I can't see what they are doing unless I go to a fast lube place like the stinking JiffyLube and I have developed a sincere hate for these places...
