Cheap of Free Way to get a computer reading

My 4RUnner's Check Engine light came on as well as the truck shifting high fro 1st to 2nd gear about 2 weeks ago...I haven't been able to get it looked and don't have the cash for a big job right now..but I want to know what the computer is saying kicking this out...the light came out about 16 months ago and it was nothing, and was turned off by my mechanic.

My tranny was redone in 2008 so I am thinking something is going wrong again, but don't want to hand it to someone who will give me a HUGE bill based on my lack of knowledge of what is going on inside the engine / tranny.

most major auto part stores will read and clear your codes for free

pulling the EFI fuse under the hood (few min) will reset the computer and clear codes/ lights, altho without a scanner you wont know why it threw the code.

^This. They will also look up what parts you need based on your code. You can also bring your code back with you and use this forum as a resource. I myself have a ScanGuageII, so j can pull all the codes and clear them myself. If you get the code pulled, let us know if we can help.

Have an Android phone? Download the Torque app from google play. Then buy a $15 bluetooth OBDII reader from ebay.

Check out what iTunes has. I recall one app called Rev that is very similar. Only thing is that you need a wifi reader which is more expensive. With that said, it might end up paying for itself in the long run and it's also another gadget that you can use on all of your vehicles (depending if they have OBDII or not).

With the price of the app and the dongle/wifi adapter you could buy an Ultragauge or save a few more dollars and get a Scangauge. I used to have Rev on my iPhone and the Ultragauge is much better and doesn't tie up my phone.

I just checked it out. $40! And then the cost of a wifi adapter..

I remember it being cheaper a few years back. In that case, I would get an Ultragauge. I think the SG2's screen looks outdated.

If you want cheap, get one of these for a little over $20. I have Torque on my tablet, but I bought one of these to leave in the truck full-time, and to lend to kids/friends when they need it. It just reads and clears codes and checks ready-state, but that's what you need 80% of the time. This is the same one AutoZone lent me when I was out-of-town once.
