Cheaper option than this set-up...?

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on the following suspension, but want to know if there is a cheaper alternative or a great source that has these parts for less than toytec (who wants about 200 for each component making it ~$600) that would achieve the same result?

Front: stock springs + bilstein 5100 adjustables (part D558) I think these are for a tacoma?

Rear: OME 890 springs + Bilstein 5125 (4R96-BIL)

Any other bit/parts I need to/should buy when I install these? (I am a noob when it comes to trucks):shrug:

The goal is to have a firm but comfortable quality ride with a slight rake and a ~3" lift to fit 33" tires (285-70-17 BF Goodrich T/A KO) on a 97 sr5 3.4l.

If you want comfy, go with ome comfort shocks. I have those front and reear bilsteins, and trust me.. they're not built for comfort! Why would you run stock front springs? That doesn't make sense to me.

It is my understanding that you have to run aftermarket coils with the fatter tundra version of the 5100, but I think the version I cited is the Tacoma version with 3 Settings that will fit with a stock coil which toytec sells for our 3rd gen 4runners.

I thought I could knock ~180 off the price by using the 5100 shocks for the lift Killing two birds with one stone while achieving the slight rake that I want. I don't want an even 3" all around, and don't want to have to lift the rear even more to perch it higher than the front. Is this faulty logic, or is it not a compatible setup?

I see what you are saying now, however someone might chime in with a little more experience with using the stock coils and those front shocks. I don't think it will be a comfy ride though if that's what you're going for.
 
Well comfort isn't my priority. I like a planted feel, but also don't want a brain rattler! How would the stock springs change the ride compared to that shock + an aftermarket coil? And with that setup how would you describe the ride as compared to stock, as best you can? Since you have 5125 + ome 890 in the rear what did you pair w the 5100s in front?
 
I believe there was a member here that put tundra 5100 in stock coils. I have a set of them that I could compare to stock shock diameter if you're curious.
 
Sure, I would be very curious. I thought I read that they didn't fit, but if thy did they would be preferable since they have two more adjustment points! Then again, are there any other cheaper ways of accomplishing my goal or is my proposed setup the least expensive path with reasonable performance?
 
Too bad there isn't an adjustable rear as well so that I could run the whole setup near stock height at a later date if I wanted to...
 
You would be much better off finding a set of front springs and setting the 5100's on the lower perch. It'll ride like sh*t with them jacked all the way up, your front end will ride like a basketball.

Adjustables aren't an option for the rear because the rears aren't a coilover design.

As far as saving some money, hunt around for a set of used springs or even a set someone bought but never used (like me.)

Do you have a set I can call dibs on or is that how you found your own set? What is the least expensive coil for the front that will do the job I want?
 
Since you asked for a cheaper option, why don't you piece it together yourself? I bought LC springs (7 7/8 wrap) for $90 shipped, used OME 883s for $110 shipped, Rough Country front shocks from Wheelers for about $135 shipped, and some Monroe Magnum LC rear shocks from O'Reilly ($88 pair). It looks good and rides great. I have about $425 in it. I put some 2nd gen sway bar links on too - another $50. Just look around on the forums. Guys are always selling springs.
 
I ran 5100s up front with the perch at 2.5" with stock springs for about 7 months and it rode great. Just a little stiffer than stock but still very comfy. When I swapped the stock coils out to toytec/eibachs and 0" on the shocks the ride got even stiffer.

LC springs with Monroes in the back
Adjustable track bar brings it all in-line
Treadwright tires puts $700 in your wallet
Finish off with an alignment
And you'll be smiling all day long!


*Specfically the Toytec branded Eibach front springs with the adj 5100 Bilsteins.
 
I see your lift in the back with that setup is 5" and 3" in the front and you clear the 33" tires but I was hoping for a 2.5/3" lift thwashed minimal body roll. Do you have a firm ride or does it wallow around?

Can you get those treadwrights with intact white lettering on the sidewalls or do they end up jacked up? I am a sucker for that BFG lettering and that was the other purchase I was waffling on.

Regarding the quality of ride. I am blown away daily at how quickly I can take corners with my current set up. It handles very similar to my old MR2 spyder. Keep in mind, I still have sway bars attached. Absolutely NO wallowing whatsoever, tracks straight as an arrow, and is surprisingly plush without being soft. Similar to how an BMW X5 rides, supportive yet comfortable.

If I had to do it all over again, I would ...

Great advice in this thread. Toytec confirmed Rhyi's setup as well, when I put it to them to weigh in on what I was thinking of doing and whether it would be wise for me to get a new front spring setup: "The Bilstein 5100's are designed to work with the stock front coils, but we have aftermarket springs that have heavier spring rates and provide lift. If you are to use any aftermarket lift coils the c clip will need to be set to the lowest setting. "

I like the idea of your custom less expensive setup, but I don't want a full 5" of lift in the rear! 3" would be perfect, 5 seems like too much for my samoyed to manage getting in and out all the time.
