Bought truck. Came with 1 set of keys and key fob. Ordered spares of each off ebay. I know how to program the key Fob..

Where do you think I can get a cheap chipped key cut and coded???? I know the dealership will do it, and charge an arm and leg.

I got my key cut at a local hardware store for $2 and my dealership programmed the key code for free.

Nice. Did you have to register the key to the car? I have heard on some cars with chipped keys you need to do that, or on ours you simply code the KEY to the car??

I think they may register the key but I'm not sure. I know they needed my car and the key at the dealership, whereas the hardware store that I got it cut in just needed my old key for the type of coding they do (but their coder wouldn't work on my 4R key)

I've read that some dealerships charge but mine did not.

I like to get the key cut from the VIN at the dealer because it's a true original (not a copy). So it's less likely to not be stiff in the ignition, etc. My friend got a used 'yota and did the same by buying an OEM blank on ebay for cheap. The local Toyota dealer cut the key from VIN for free, and programmed the key and charged one hour of labor (about $70).
